Vehicle Assault Attacks | Terroristic Incidents | attack on first responder
May 19, 2013 In Pennsylvania township of Coolbaugh on 1:15 a.m. taxi Driver Michael West was believed to have lost control of his taxi when he suddenly crossed over the highway to collide head-on with a fire police van of the Coolbaugh Township Volunteer Fire Company . A witness said that he was speeding up at an excessive rate of speed as he was passing his truck on wet pavement. Then the driver side wheels lifted off as his Chrysler minivan swerved onto the path of the oncoming truck. 55 year old taxi driver West was killed and four emergency responders were hurt. Investigators believe the taxi which was carrying no passengers accidentally slid into the path of the oncoming Coolbaugh Township fire police van. Four volunteer firefighters were taken to hospitals, and two were in intensive care
Head-on accident looks suspiciously like a deliberate suicide attack on first responders by a taxi driver.

Coolbaugh attempted murder, arson case heading to county court
Shuman had been in a domestic dispute with one of the residents prior to the fire. Police said Shuman removed the electric meter on the side of the house, poured gasoline around the front and back doors and then lit the fire. The lack of power to the house put the four residents in greater danger because they are deaf and needed to rely on the flash of special alarms to alert them to a fire, police said.

Driver in fatal Coolbaugh Township crash sits in jail, awaits bail
Facing up to 65 years in state prison if convicted on vehicular homicide charges in a February fatal crash in Coolbaugh Township, a man with no prior criminal record has cooperated with police and thus is no flight risk, his attorneys told a judge Wednesday. However, Magisterial District Judge Anthony Fluegel agreed with prosecutors that Jiayuan Liang, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y., indeed has significant reasons to flee the country prior to trial if bail is set too low."This was a very terrible accident that may or may not have been a vehicular homicide," defense attorney Robin Spishock said. "To call someone of Mr. Liang's character and background a threat to society or a flight risk is unrealistic."
Escorted by a state trooper on the way into court, a handcuffed, somber Liang said, "I don't remember," when asked how fast he had been driving on icy Interstate 380 the night of Feb. 26. Police said someone witnessed Liang driving at 80 mph prior to the van crash that killed passenger Jianwu Zhang, 30, of Ithaca, N.Y., and injured 14 other passengers plus Liang himself.

At about 12:15 p.m., the surreal scene played out in his rearview mirror.
The roads were wet when Lynch drove away from A Pocono Country Place. The fire police vehicle was behind him, but not too close, he said. He likes to keep two or three car lengths between himself and other vehicles because he knows what wet roads can be like. Lynch estimates he was traveling about 45 mph.
He saw the taxi coming toward him at a high rate of speed. "I got this feeling something was going to happen," Lynch said.
Missed by a foot
The taxi was close to the middle of the road. It looked as if maybe it was hydroplaning, he said. So Lynch sped up just enough to get by the taxi a little quicker.
"He just missed me," Lynch said with the sound of shock lingering in his voice. "He missed my truck by about 12 inches."
Just as the taxi passed him, its driver-side wheels came off the roadway, leaning toward the passenger side. [This indicates he was steering hard left, causing vehicle to tip right, into the path of the oncoming truck] Then it crashed into the fire police vehicle with a loud bang, like a bomb went off, Lynch said.
"This guy hit them so hard the impact was just devastating," Lynch said. "There was nothing they could do. They couldn't even move out of the way.

Masucci said he did not know West all that well, but they shared a workplace over West's four years at the company. "He was an all-around nice guy," Masucci said.
