July 6, 2018 Murder of Sharath Koppu UMKC Student From India Sharath Koppu, a UMKC University of Missouri-Kansas City student from India was shot in the back about 7 p.m. Friday when a man attempted to rob J's Fish and Chicken Market in Kansas City. (1) Koppu was a software engineer who arrived six months before working on a master’s degree was helping out a family friend, but was shot in the back when he did not know how to open the register and ran. On July 15, 2018, the unnamed suspect ambushed police and died in a firefight as helicopters, an armored car and tactical teams swarmed the area. (2)
