An inclusion rider or equity rider is a provision added to a contract of an actor to ensure that casting and production staff meet certain levels of diversity, for example regarding the inclusion of women, people of color, LGBT people and people with disabilities.[1]
The idea was developed by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, professor at the University of Southern California, Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism[2], in a 2014 op-ed for The Hollywood Reporter[3] and in her 2016 TED talk[4]. After meeting with Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni[5], Head of Strategic Outreach at Pearl Street Films, the idea took flight and the two began looking for an employment attorney to craft the language for an inclusion rider in film. Smith and Cox DiGiovanni were connected with Kalpana Kotagal[6], a civil-rights and employment-practice attorney at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC[7] in Washington, D.C.[8]. The three are the co-architects of an original inclusion rider template[9].

Soon after the 2018 Academy Awards ceremony, filmmakers Michael B. Jordan[13], Brie Larson[14], Paul Feig,[15] Matt Damon and Ben Affleck[16], committed to adopting inclusion riders in all their future production agreements. In an unprecedented move, WME threw its support behind the inclusion rider calling for adoption of the rider across their clients[17]. When political statements override all other concerns in creative endeavors, the result is often the worst sort agitprop that turns off even sympathetic audiences. There are plenty of ways in which any sort of diversity directive can go wrong, but that's also equally true for the status quo. Most movies are pretty mediocre, after all. There's no reason from the outset to believe that inclusion riders will raise costs or decrease quality. And if it will help change a Hollywood culture that has often lagged the larger culture in inclusion, that's good
