I'm sure that culture was the source of his thought process for committing the act. Not things like radicalization, extremism, mental illness perhaps. Remember when Irish culture was all about hijacking planes and blowing up pubs? (Russians were behind that) .
We don’t know if it’s religiously motivated right now. We just know the due is foreign born, Iranian if I’m reading right. Since Iran is a Muslim country, people always assume that any terror attacks committed by its people are because of Islam.
Unfortunately you can read this between the lines these days: if anything other than Islamic terrorism was to be suspected, then the media would have made it excessively clear already.

The perpetrator first tried to set fire to the bus, then when thwarted attacked driver and passengers with fists then knife. A total of 10 people were injured, of which one sustained life-threatening injuries.

What exactly took place inside the bus just before 2 pm is not very clear, according to the authorities. After first findings, the culprit had a backpack with him. This contained fire accelerator.
He apparently parked the backpack in the middle of the articulated bus, and the backpack caught fire. When the bus driver noticed, he stopped the bus on the right side of the road and tried to fight the flames with a fire extinguisher.
Subsequently, the bus driver was attacked from behind, so he told the "Lübeck news". Presumably, the perpetrator tried to prevent him from extinguishing the fire. Schleswig-Holstein's Interior Minister Hans-Joachim Grote (CDU) said the bus driver had been punched with his fist.
An inmate of the bus reported that the perpetrator had indiscriminately attacked the passengers with a knife. The humans would have tried to defend themselves against the attacks.
The bus driver could have prevented worse by opening the doors. The people fled screaming from the vehicle. A police patrol noticed the smoking bus and was able to arrest the offender. Whether policemen or passengers have overpowered the culprit is not clear.

At that, the driver stopped the bus and approached the perpetrator. Grote: „He confronted the man, upon which the man punched him in the face with his fist.“
After the wrangling that ensued the knife-attack took place. „The man pulled out a knife and stabbed six passengers indiscriminately. Besides the bus driver, two more people were wounded.“
Passengers overpower attacker
Police said the man was a German citizen and Lübeck local who was born in Iran but had lived in Germany for a long time.
The man’s lawyer told German television channel n-tv his client was suffering from a mental disorder, possibly “paranoid schizophrenia.”
