Saturday July 21, 2018 Los Angeles Trader Joes Standoff Suspect, Gene Evin Atkins shot his grandmother 7 times and then shot, kidnapped and forced his girlfriend into his grandmother's car. Officers tracked the vehicle with lojack and tried to stop the suspect in Hollywood, but the man refused to pull over, During the chase, the suspect fired at officers, shooting out the back window of his car like a gangster from cops and robbers. Then he deliberately crashed into a pole outside the Trader Joe's in the city's Silver Lake section, exchanged gunfire with police who fired back killing a woman employee store employee, Melyda Corado. Then he ran into the store and took 40 to 50 people hostage as officers in riot gear negotiated with the suspect who  made a "series of demands" (2) suspect used the telephone at one point during the ordeal Atkins “asked to speak to his grandmother ‘several’ times.” “He said he would start killing us if he didn’t get to talk to his granny,”   customers and employees jumped out of windows and hid in the store’s freezer (4)  Though it was a  police shooting, the suspect is charged with murder because of the provacative act theory of murder which holds him responsible. (1)

Atkins has a previous arrest for suspicion of vandalism from 2008 for which he was not charged, and his grandmother sought a temporary restraining order against him two years later. (4)  Atkins was taken in by his grandmother as a boy when his father went to prison, (4)  Atkins’ cousin, Charlene Egland, told The Los Angeles Times that “Atkins had been involved in a feud with his grandmother over his girlfriend’s presence at the home Atkins’ mother was a drug addict and his father served a lengthy prison term when Atkins was only 8. ” ABC7 said the suspect might have shot his grandmother because she didn’t want his girlfriend in the house.  (4)
