Hakim" in the student newspaper, the Minnesota Daily. He defended Louis Farrakhan against claims of racism, and further wrote that Farrakhan "is also not an anti-Semite" and called affirmative action a "sneaky" form of compensation for slavery, suggesting that white Americans instead pay reparations to blacks.Mother Jones reported that, under the name "Keith X Ellison," he wrote defenses of Farrakhan against accusations of anti-semitism after the 1995 Million Man March, and again in 1997. Although Ellision would later attempt to minimize his involvement with the Nation of Islam, even going so far as claiming he wasn't a member, Minister James Muhammad, a former leader of the Nation of Islam's Twin Cities study group, says that Ellison had served for several years as the group's "chief of protocol", in which capacity he acted as a liaison between Muhammad and local communities.  Denunciation of the Nation of Islam in 2006  2006 campaign, Republican blogger Michael Brodkorb[130] unearthed posts about Ellison's Minnesota Daily articles and his involvement with the Nation of Islam. In response, Ellison wrote a letter to the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota & the Dakotas falsely claiming he had never been a member, and that his connections with the Nation of Islam were limited to an 18-month period during which he helped organize the Minnesota contingent at the 1995 Million Man March.

Why I support same-sex marriage: a religious argument in ...
Omid Safi   Mar 27, 2013 - More Muslims are speaking out in favor of a holistic conception of justice, one that recognizes that we are all in this together.   We recognize that a threat to justice anywhere–to gays/lesbians–is a threat to justice anywhere–including our own rights.     One brilliant and courageous exa mple is the first Muslim elected to the US Congress, Keith Ellison.    In his speeches, he strongly stands for same-sex marriage rights by stating: If the person who you happen to love and want to be with happens to be the same gender as you then I say God bless you and go out and be as happy as you can be.

Keith Ellison-Muhammad | The Weekly Standard Holding positions of leadership in the Congressional Progressive Caucus According to Ellison, “In Islam, your religion is what you make of it.”  As for the vexed question of gay marriage, Ellison concedes that “I get Muslims who come up to me and ask, ‘Brother Keith, how can you be in favor of gay marriage?’ ” Brother Keith explains: “I’m in favor of civil rights for all. I’m in favor of freedom.”  Those of us wondering about the reconciliation of his faith with his politics now have the answer. Which branch of Islam comports with the agenda of the Democratic party on social issues? Ellison reveals it to be the Ellison branch of Islam.

I am working to advance Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) equality in Congress by ending existing discrimination written in federal laws, giving law enforcement tools to pursue perpetrators of hate crimes, and extending marriage rights and responsibilities to same-sex couples and families.

Marriage Equality

I believe in expanding marriage rights and responsibilities to same-sex couples and to have those marriages recognized by other states and the federal government. I strongly support repealing the discriminatoryDefense of Marriage Act, which actively denies marriage rights and recognition to same-sex couples.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

I also believe that men and women in our armed services should be able to serve their country openly, regardless of their sexual orientation and I am fighting to end the unjust “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Hate Crimes

I am proud that we expanded hate crime laws to extend protections to victims of crimes committed against them on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity. After more than a decade of work, theMatthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was signed into law by President Obama on October 28th, 2009.

Employment Non-Discrimination

I am a strong supporter of legislation called the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which prohibits discrimination in employment based on a worker’s sexual orientation or gender identity -- similar to protections we offer based on age, gender, religious affiliation, and race.

I am proud to be vice-chair of the Congressional Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Caucus.
