Thomas The Imperialist Racist Tank Engine

  2. Racism allegation[edit]

Henry was the central character of what might be the most controversial story in the history of the Railway Series. In the story 'Henry's Sneeze', the character blasts some troublemaking schoolboys with soot. The story was attacked in 1972 due to the fact that it described the boys in question to have been rendered "as black as n***."[1]
The story was considered so controversial that it was actually reported in the national press. Awdry himself claimed that it was a case of oversensitivity on the part of the race relations board; a complaint that was misinterpreted by some members of the public as meaning that he was a racist. To solve the problem, he changed the offending sentence to "as black as soot", which has been used in subsequent editions of the book.

There is something rotten on the Island of Sodor, home to Thomas the Tank Engine. Viewers won't find guns, violence, or anything even approaching a double-entendre. There's none of the blatant racism of early Disney Song of the South or religion delivered through talking produce, as in Veggie Tales. Yet something aboutThomas and Friends gives liberal parents the creeps.
For example: In 2009, academic Shauna Wilton wrote that Thomas carried a "conservative political ideology." Her report was derided as whimsy-hating "political correctness" by conservative media outlets. But wait: Thomas espouses top-down leadership, is male-dominated, punishes dissent, and is uninterested in the mushy sensitivity of its PBS counterparts. (Thomas and his "friends" often "tease" like this: " 'Wake up lazy bones! Do some hard work for a change!") Its innate conservatism is as obvious as the liberalism of cooperative, solar-panel-building Bob the Builderand his band of hippie hammer-lovers. Given charges that Thomas is anti - Semitic and that Sodor is a fascist paradise, Wilton's assessment is mild. Obviously, it's foolish to claim that Thomas is a fascist. He and his friends are clearly imperialists.

by Raheem Kassam - 7 days ago - Every so often the Guardian disappears up its own arse. It's like that line from the Godfather from Peter Clemenza: "These things gotta happen .subjecting them to her own white, post-colonial guilt:
"...these trains perform tasks dictated by their imperious, little white boss, Sir Topham Hatt (also known as The Fat Controller), whose attire of a top hat, tuxedo and big round belly is just a little too obvious. Basically, he's the Monopoly dictator of their funky little island. Hatt orders the trains to do everything from hauling freight to carrying passengers to running whatever random errand he wants done, whenever he wants it done – regardless of their pre-existing schedules.
She of course means "boss" or "employer" or something along those lines. But calling the Fat Controller and imperial dictator is a little spicier isn't it? Plus who believes in "bosses" anyway? It's 2014. Isn't the whole world a commune yet? She continues...
"(For the record, all the "villains" on Thomas and Friends are the dirty diesel engines. I'd like to think there was a good environmental message in there, but when the good engines pump out white smoke and the bad engines pump out black smoke – and they are all pumping out smoke – it's not hard to make the leap into the race territory.)"
Actually it is almost impossible to make that leap, yet Van Slyke manages it anyway, quickly forgetting that the show is about steam engines, and that light vs dark in terms of good and evil is a notion that far predates the Equality Commission

The article, “Thomas the Tank Engine had to shut the hell up to save ... Our Guardian friend was also disturbed by all the racist smoke: “The ...COULD the human race be devolving? Instead of the evolutionary process improving our collective wisdom and aptitude, is public discourse, in fact, becoming increasingly asinine?
I pondered that question after stumbling upon a particularly unhinged piece of commentary in one of the many Leftie publications where shrill hysteria and irrational hate pass for analysis.
The article, “Thomas the Tank Engine had to shut the hell up to save children everywhere”, was published in The Guardian, quelle surprise, and accused the much-loved children’s program of promoting racism, sexism, classism and anti-environmentalism.
Naturally, the author has banned her three-year-old son from watching the program lest he be indoctrinated in the evil ways of the redneck locomotives. Seriously.
According to the author, the program that has delighted generations of children conceals some “twisted, anachronistic messages” including the “little white boss” barking orders and behaving like a “controlling autocrat”, only one of the female trains being “name checked in the opening credits” and the startling revelation that girls like pink.
Our Guardian friend was also disturbed by all the racist smoke: “The ‘villains’ on Thomas and Friends are the dirty diesel engines. I’d like to think there was a good environmental message in there, but when the good engines pump out white smoke and the bad engines pump out black smoke — and they are all pumping out smoke — it’s not hard to make the leap into the race territory.”
