Vox  Schumer warned of a “rapidly changing economy that benefits too few while leaving too many behind,” a somewhat more cutting remark when stated in front of a billionaire proposing massive tax cuts for the rich. Then he delivered his most pointed jab:
We Americans have always been a forward-looking, problem-solving, optimistic, patriotic, and decent people. Whatever our race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, whether we're immigrant or native-born, whether we live with disabilities or do not, in wealth or in poverty, we're all exceptional in our commonly held yet fierce devotion to our country.
To some extent, this is standard patriotic rhetoric. But when said in front of a man who thought a Latino judge was not fit to judge him, who has called for a ban on Muslim immigration and for mass deportations, who mocked a New York Times reporter’s disability, and whose entire rise to power would’ve been impossible without his own incredible wealth, it takes on new meaning. Mentioning “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” in front of Mike Pence, a stalwart opponent of LGBTQ rights, stings as well.
