Shooting[edit]

At 11:40 a.m., Gordeyev, concealing his weapons with a bag and fur coat,[3] went to his school armed with a Tikka T3 rifle and a small caliber Japanese Browning BAR M1918 that belonged to his father,[4] a police colonel.[5] He threatened the security guard and went to his geography classroom, where he gunned down his teacher, 29-year-old Andrey Kirillov (RussianАндрей Кириллов). He then took the class of 29 students hostage.[6] Gordeyev then shot at responding police in the school, killing Warrant Officer Sergei Bushuyev, 38, and wounding Senior Sergeant Vladimir Krokhin, 29.[7] The Special Forces came to school and his father was brought into the school with a bulletproof vest to talk to Gordeyev, who released the hostages and was captured.[8]

Reaction[edit]

Russian president Vladimir Putin called this incident a tragedy and asked to give one's attention to children's education and gun control.[9]
Russian Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin spoke to journalist saying he believed the student, 16-year-old Sergei Gordeev, was suffering from an emotional disorder. He had an excellent school record and no previous apparent conflicts with either teachers or fellow pupils.[10]
