July 2009: A network of hijacked computers mostly based in South Korea launched a series of coordinated cyber attacks against government, news media, and financial websites in South Korea and the United States. The Korean intelligence agency announced that the attacks were probably carried out by a hostile group or government, and the news agency Yonhap reported that the agency had implicated North Korea or pro-North Korean groups. The the attacking software contained the text string “get/China/DNS,” with DNS referring to China’s Internet routing system, while the opposition party accused the government of fearmongering to justify more repression in the name of counterterrorism.
