- 1 killed October 13, 2014 Pittsburgh sanitation worker shot to death in Carrick Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Mr. Hodges was sitting in his personal vehicle when the shooting occurred, Ms. Toler said. The vehicle was parked in an area on the street where workers normally drive to meet the garbage truck and start their shifts, she said. Mr. Hodges was shot at least once on the left side of his body, and his vehicle had been shot 12 times, she said. The shooting this morning caps off a weekend of violence in the city's South Hills neighborhoods. Police said four people were shot, none fatally, in Arlington Heights and another man was shot to death in Beltzhoover.

DeFrances had been told a week before the shooting that he would be demoted as part of a company downsizing, authorities said. Attacker DeFrances had been with the supply technology firm “virtually since its inception,” and shot himself after the attack.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “refuse and recyclable material collectors” consistently have one of the highest rates of on-the-job fatalities. Only loggers, fishermen, aircraft pilots, roofers, and steel workers were at greater risk of dying on the job in 2012, the last year for which data are available. “While the fatality rate for all occupations is 4.7 deaths per 100,000 workers, garbage collectors die at a rate of 46 per 100,000,” wrote journalist Elizabeth Royte in her 2005 book Garbage Land: On the Secret Trail of Trash. “In fact, they’re approximately three times more likely to be killed on the job than police officers or firefighters.”
- Nina Pham: Dallas Ebola Nurse Nina Pham has been named as the nurse in Texas who has been diagnosed with Ebola. She is the first person to have contracted the disease in the United States. believed to have contracted Ebola while she was treating Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man who died of the virus on October 8. Her contact with Duncan has been described as “extensive.” Despite wearing protective equipment, Pham, like hundreds of health workers in Liberia, still contracted the disease. She’s been a nurse since August 2010. She’s never faced disciplinary action.
