we need to stop fear-mongering about radiation because it hurts people. It blocks real help from going to those in need. It thwarts people’s lives from returning to normal.  It guarantees the trauma will live on and on and on, just to promote someone’s ideological cause. It’s nasty and it’s cruel. It needs to stop.

 after those two months, the situation in Japan needed to be re-evaluated and people allowed to return to most areas below reasonable radiation levels, levels in which many of us elsewhere in the world live. But that did not happen. Instead, the Japanese people are being held in a horrible limbo, kept in fear by ideologues who care more about closing nuke plants than in the lives of these refugees.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) needs to revisit its original standard tolerance dose of 0.7 Sv/year it set in 1934 to deal with emergencies and that has been borne out by all population studies since, and set a new limit for disasters such as 0.1 Sv/year or so. Otherwise, not just the Japanese people, but the rest of the world will continue to be confused and afraid for all time, even about medical procedures.
