Some 80 French counter-terrorism troops landed in the Niger capital of Niamey, state-run France24 broadcasting reported, adding, "The French military remains discreet on its role in the region." No one has claimed responsibility for the abduction but the French government believes the north African wing of al-Qaeda is responsible for the kidnapping.
The seven were abducted from their heavily-guarded living quarters on Thursday and are believed to have been taken deep into the vast Sahel desert near the Malian border.
Areva has already begun the evacuation of its employees from Niger's northern Sahara desert region.
