Venice Beach Driving Rampage 9/20/2016 Update ---

1 killed, 16 injured, suspect convicted, not terrorism (?) August 3, 2013  Venice Beach Driving Rampage  Los Angeles California. 38 yr old Nathan Campbell deliberately drove a car through a crowd at the Venice Beach boardwalk, injuring 16 and killing Italian newlywed Alice Gruppioni on her honeymoon. Police are searching for a motive since terrorism was quickly ruled out. Campbell was arrested two hours later after turning himself in. He was charged with murder, 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 17 counts of hit-and-run. He was a transient living in a late model Dodge Avenger who had served time for shoplifting in Colorado. The public defender called it "horrendous accident", not a "rampage", and Campbell pleaded not guilty, saying he was struggling to get the car shifted out of park when it went out of control and he gunned the gas, somehow slipped through the only gap in row of anti-car barriers. Video showed the car hit crowds, then accidentally back up and then make another pass at the throng. In September 2015 Campbell was convicted of second-degree murder  and sentenced to 42 years to life in state prison. Later on the tactic of running over people with cars would become recognized as terrorist attack method.

defense attorney Philip Dube told reporters his client “never intended to hurt anybody or to kill that young lady.” Campbell’s attorney contended that what happened was an accident and that Campbell “panicked” when he experienced a problem with the shift lever on the 2008 Dodge Avenger he had bought a few weeks earlier at a used-car dealership in Colorado. The lawyer said his client was struggling to get the Avenger out of parking gear when he gunned the sedan and it went forward. dailynews

Gunfire, Terror on Venice Beach Boardwalk APRIL 19, 2011 BY: GARY LONDON
A pleasant day at the beach can include surf, sand...and gunfire.Long considered to be safe, the boardwalk at Venice Beach can now be added to the list of places in Southern California vulnerable to gang-related violence... A so-called flash mob event culminated in gunfire Saturday resulting in one serious injury. The social media twitter was used on Friday to advertise the gathering at Venice Beach. During the course of the event, for inexplicable reasons, shooting erupted, one person was wounded in the head and was reported in critical condition. At this time it is unclear as to the motive (is it real or is it terrorism?)

Fatal California boardwalk car crash was accident, not rampage: lawyer
By Dana Feldman
LOS ANGELES | Tue Oct 15, 2013 7:24pm EDT
(Reuters) - A man accused of murder for plowing his car into crowds at a California beach boardwalk this summer, killing an Italian newlywed on her honeymoon, did not intend to harm anyone in what amounted to a "horrendous accident," his public defender said on Tuesday.... pleaded not guilty to murder, assault with a deadly weapon and 17 counts of felony hit-and-run stemming from the August incident at the Venice Beach boardwalk in which 16 people were also injured. "This had nothing to do with him committing an intentional act," public defender Philip Dube told Reuters after a court hearing in Los Angeles on Tuesday, saying he believed the car may have had mechanical problems....."The question is whether or not this was his fault."

Scenes from the Venice boardwak car rampage

Witnesses reported a horrendous scene of people scattered and bloody in the popular tourist area. )A coroner's investigator tells City News Service that the dead woman is 32-year-old Alice Gruppioni of Italy.
site isn't far from the Santa Monica Farmer's Market where a 2003 crash left 10 dead and 63 hurt, after an 87-year-old man's car accidentally roared through the market.
According to the security video and witness accounts, the man with a baseball cap, gray shirt and white pants parked next to the Cadillac Hotel, twice walking out to the boardwalk before getting into the Dodge Avenger and accelerating, swerving around yellow poles meant to prevent cars from getting into the pedestrian-only area and onto the boardwalk

    GALAXY_PLANET says:

Horrific and tragic that it sounds. This scenario is not too far-fetched. Most of our young teenagers and adults have done this simulation. The all too familiar game grand theft auto a game that I love playing. Grand theft auto 3 and 4 have a similar boardwalk scene in their game where this can actually be done. Of course, there's no incentive or scoring points for running people over with the car. But if you do kill the person you get money left on the ground next to the person as a reward. Are video games to blame? Rational people who play this game, young and old can leave it at that, It's just a game. But the mentally disturbed and terrorists. This would be a perfect simulation to carry out their plans to create havoc in our society.
