Falconer saw the knife, announced he was a police officer and ordered to drop the knife, chased him into the Macys. Falconer shot Ten people were injured, and the attacker was shot dead inside the mall by an off-duty law enforcement officer who had a gun. He had told his father he was going to buy a new iphone. Within hours, the ISIS terrorist group called him one of their soldiers, but authorities chose to discount the claim without further proof. One year later, Star Tribune says his motive remains "unclear".

The Hill reports that he was a part time security guard. immigrated with his parents from the Muslim nation of Somalia The FBI investigated possible terrorism, and concluded it was “at least in part” motivated by “inspiration from radical Islamic groups,”Although Somalis have been prosecuted for trying to join ISIS and Al Shabab terrorist groups overseas, it is the first attack carried out by a Somali on U.S. soil to be recognized by the media and FBI. Dahir Adan was stopped by police three times for minor traffic violations, but had no history of violence. On September 28, 2016 FBI Director James Comey declined to confirm the attack was an act of terrorism but they were still working on it, and it looks to have been motivated "by some sort of inspiration from radical Islamic groups" On October 6, 2016, officials announced that Adan had shouted "Islam! Islam!" and "Allah Ackbar!" during the attack. He had been newly interested in Islam and withdrew from his friends in the months before the attack.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Thornton provided the following timeline that led up to the rampage the night of September 17.
3 p.m.- Adan returns home from a shift at work, but doesn't get out of his uniform or take a nap, as was his usual custom. When asked why, he responded by saying he "had work to do that night."
7:54 p.m. - Stopped at Super America convenience store, a place he frequented. As he was leaving, a clerk said "See you later." Adan responds, "You won't be seeing me again."
8:02 p.m. - Returns to his apartment for a short time, leaves for Crossroads Mall five minutes later.
8:09 p.m. - Involved in a hit-and-run accident with a bicyclist who cracks the windshield on Adan's Camry.
8:13 p.m. - Arrives at Crossroads Mall, and begins his rampage outside the mall just one minute later.
"I cannot think of anyone, including myself, who could have handled themselves and the situation at the Crossroads Mall any better than Officer Falconer did," said Avon Police Chief Corey Nellis. "I am proud to call Officer Falconer an Avon Police Officer, and I truly believe that the citizens of central Minnesota owe this officer a debt of gratitude, as he truly is a Minnesota hero."
Why isn't the suspect identified? Media initially would not identify his race, religion or politics but they want to rule out terrorism, they say there is no clear motive, but he was shouting "allah" and asked people if they were muslim. It was a planned attack because he was in disguise as a security guard. He was killed by good guy off duty police officer with a gun. Suspect is Muslim Somali born in Africa community college student. ISIS claims he was a soldier.
While the motive in Saturday's stabbings isn't yet known, if it turns out to be a terrorist attack, it would be the first carried out by a Somali on U.S. soil, said Karen Greenburg, director of the Center on National Security at Fordham University School of Law.

At about 8:15 on the evening of September 17, an individual began stabbing patrons inside the Crossroads Center shopping mall.[2] Before the spree ended, ten people were injured, three of whom were hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds.[3] Reports said the attacker made references to Allah and asked at least one person if they were Muslim.[4][5][6][7]

Adan, age 22, was a member of St. Cloud's Somali-American community.[13] He was born in Kenya and moved to the U.S. at the age of two[14][15][16][17] on a refugee visa, becoming a U.S. citizen in 2008.[18][19] Adan was described by a community spokesman as having no record of violence, and as a good student who was more interested in sports than religion. He attended Apollo High School and was last enrolled in the St. Cloud State University in the spring of 2016, where he planned to major ininformation systems.[7][12] He had three previous encounters with police for minor traffic violations.[8] His friends described him as a Muslim, but they did not believe he had extremist views.[11]
Adan had been employed part-time by the Swiss security services provider Securitas; he had been assigned to guard an unidentified Electrolux facility.[8][20] He resigned in June 2016[21] and handed over his official uniform back to the company. A mall spokesperson said Adan never worked security at the mall, nor was he an employee of the company that did its security.[11]
Two nights prior to the stabbing, Adan called a Somali community soccer coach asking for advice on how to lose weight; the coach later said that he believed Adan was not suffering from any mental illness at the time.[12] According to a Somali-American community leader, Adan had saved up money to purchase the newly released iPhone 7 and was going to Crossroads Center to make the purchase. He was described as "joyful" and "happy" before leaving for the mall.[22]

Leaders of Minnesota's Somali-American community held a joint news conference in St. Cloud the day after the stabbings. They condemned the attack and also expressed concern at the rise of anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment in response to the attack, calling for unity among the general community.[27][28]

Investigators say Falconer opened fire a second time, dropping Adan to the ground. The suspect managed to get to his hands and knees, crawling at the officer with a knife in his hands. A third burst of gunfire finally stopped Adan.

Dahir Adan had attended Apollo High School in St. Cloud. He lived with his father. According to a local reporter: 'Dahir's soccer coach described him as a "quiet kid who didn't enjoy playing soccer." But was rather "concerned about his weight."' In fact, the reporter said that Dahir called his soccer coach a few nights before the stabbing to ask how to lose weight.
The reporter also mentioned rumors of mental illness, but said that Adan's uncle said that rumor was "a lie."
According to the Star Tribune, Early reports said Dahir Adan was a student at St. Cloud Technical College. However, those were not true. St. Cloud Technical College says he never attended that school.
Dahir Adan attended St. Cloud State University and was in his third year. Adan's alleged Facebook also mentions St. Cloud State University. He appears to have studied computers and had a consistently high GPA.
The Hill reports that he was a part time security guard. At one point, he lived in Fargo, according to a public records search.
Dahir Adan Shares a Name With a Famous Somali Military General, But They Are Not Related
Dahir Adan has the same name as a well known Somali general, who at one time was chief of the army. However, the two are not related in any way.

Dahir Adan was stopped by police three times for minor traffic violations. He had no history of violence.
Interestingly enough, on that Facebook page, this was posted in 2011: "Osama dead but his people aint, thats a scary thing cause they going to want payback on the U.S, hope everything jus [sic] settles down"
There is an Instagram account for a man named Dahir Adan which contains the same profile picture, but no additional photos.

There Had Been Tensions Between Somalis and Others in Dahir Adan's High School
According to the SC Times, in 2015, "more than 100 students and parents, most of them Somali, protested what they described as a pattern of bullying and discrimination to which school officials have not adequately responded." It is unknown whether Dahir Adan was involved in this event. Tension has been building in the area for several years.

Dahir Adan was last seen by his father last night between 6 and 6:30pm. He had told his father that he was going out to buy a new iPhone. At around 9pm, police told his father that he was dead and began conducting raids of his apartment.

suspect's identity hadn't been publicly released Sunday afternoon, but local Muslim and other religious leaders indicated that he was Somali.
"The central Minnesota Somali community is in distress, and we are afraid of the consequences of this incident," Mohamoud Mohamed, executive director of the St. Cloud Area Somali Salvation Organization. said at a news conference.
"Our community in central Minnesota has no relationship with ISIS or any other Islamist terrorist group," Mohamed said, adding that much of the local Somali residents fled to St. Cloud to escape groups like ISIS.
"We are being made again to suffer for their acts," he said. "They are minorities in our faith. Islam is peace."
