Januaury 28, 2014 MOOSIC - A Walnutport man surrendered to police after a tense five-hour standoff at a Moosic motel Tuesday night.
Barry Keiper Jr., no age or exact address available, fired at least 20 shots at police from a room at the Rodeway Inn, 4130 Birney Ave. Officers returned fire and threw gas grenades before storming the room about 11 p.m.,..
Police were called to the scene about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday. With the temperature hovering around 12 degrees, a team of heavily armed officers waited outside between the Moosic Motor Inn and the Rodeway Inn.
Mr. Keiper appeared to be armed with a rifle and a shotgun, according to Mr. Talerico. The Walnutport man is accused of beating an unidentified woman, also of Walnutport, earlier in the day. He briefly held her hostage Tuesday night but released her to police custody, according to Moosic Mayor James Segilia.
