Feb 15, 2005 · Do a web search for the phrase "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism" along with the name "Thomas Jefferson" and you'll find thousands of websites ...The trouble is, notes Dave Forsmark, that Thomas Jefferson never said it. He has been waging a one-man campaign to correct what he believes to be a blatant misattribution. In 2005, he wrote, "the quote is about two years old, not 200. It was made by [historian] Howard Zinn in an interview with TomPaine.com to justify his opposition to the War on Terror." Someone erroneously attributed the quote to Jefferson soon after, and now seemingly everyone is doing it.

Howard Zinn is a historian and the author of, "A People's History of the United States." In the interview published on July 3, 2002, he was asked to comment how dissent had come to be labeled unpatriotic by the Bush administration. He replied, "While some people think that dissent is unpatriotic, I would argue that dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

In fact, if patriotism means being true to the principles for which your country is supposed to stand, then certainly the right to dissent is one of those principles. And if we're exercising that right to dissent, it's a patriotic act. "
BUT WAS HOWARD ZINN THE ORIGINATOR OF THE QUOTE?

Information uncovered by the Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia suggests that Howard Zinn wasn't the originator of the phrase either, but also hints at where he picked up the phrase:

"The earliest usage of the phrase we have found is in a 1961 publication, "The Use of Force in International Affairs," 'If what your country is doing seems to you practically and morally wrong, is dissent the highest form of patriotism?'"

They further note that the phrase was in general usage during the era of protests of the Vietnam War. It was used in a speech by New York City Mayor John Lindsay at Columbia University, as reported in the New York Times on October 16, 1969. "We cannot rest content with the charge from Washington that this peaceful protest is unpatriotic...The fact is that this dissent is the highest form of patriotism."

At that time, Howard Zinn was a professor of political science at Boston University and active in the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s. However, it isn't known whether he was the originator of it and it was picked up by the other author and Lindsay, or it was simply one that resonated with him.

Zinn wrote a similar phrase in "Declarations of Independence: Cross-Examining American Ideology" published in 1991. "If patriotism were defined, not as blind obedience to government, nor as submissive worship to flags and anthems, but rather as love of one's country, one's fellow citizens (all over the world), as loyalty to the principles of justice and democracy, then patriotism would require us to disobey our government, when it violated those principles."

ABC News reports that US Intelligence had been aware for months that Major Nidal Hasan was attempting to get in touch with al-Qaeda. It is not known what role the "Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Great Falls, Virginia" played in subsequent events. But the circumstances are suggestive.  According to the Christian Science Monitor, the mosque once had prayer leader Anwar al-Awlaki. Anwar al-Awlaki had been the spiritual adviser of two September 11 attackers. He is now in Yemen and is certainly pleased at Hasan's actions:

Nidal Hassan is a hero. He is a man of conscience who could not bear living the contradiction of being a Muslim and serving in an army that is fighting against his own people. ... The US is leading the war against terrorism which in reality is a war against Islam. Its army is directly invading two Muslim countries and indirectly occupying the rest through its stooges. ...

But "on the Sunday talk shows, an army official warned against jumping to conclusions about Hasan".  It was the second time the phrase "jumping to conclusions" was used in the context of the Fort Hood attack. President Obama, while offering his sympathies of those shot and killed at Fort Hood was also described by the New York Times as urging Americans not to "jump to conclusions."

phrase "dissent is the highest form of patriotism" can lead to sloppy thinking which incorrectly assumes that it is always best to give a man exhibiting dangerous tendencies the benefit of the doubt. The words "don't question my patriotism" and "dissent is the highest form of patriotism" suggest that tolerance trumps everthing and pre-emptively shuts down inquiry. It is certainly always true that “we cannot fully know what leads a man to do such a thing” if one cannot ask.  After all, you can't know what's in a box if you're not allowed to peek or at least shake it. And speaking of jumping to conclusions, if you can't ask,  what alternative is there? When the true value of an object cannot be known because it is forbidden to ask many people will simply assume the worst value. Political correctness may have the long term effect not of shielding Muslims from suspicion but making it universal.

Aug 6, 2013 - American Muslim leaders don't dissent enough—the type of ... or patriotic – “dissent is the highest form of patriotism” – is a famous quote often ...There has been a natural incentive for Muslims, already widely perceived to be a “fifth column,” not to articulate dissenting views and much of this has evolved over the past decade in this country. There remains a vital need to offer differing, even critical views, about all issues pertinent to American Muslims while creating a platform for these voices to be heard broadly.

Social media was on fire recently when a notable American Muslim figure posted that American Muslims should protest attending any iftars hosted by the Government. He, and others who agreed with him, cited certain policies, such as drone strikes, advanced by the Obama administration and argued that boycotting the event would be an effective way to promote change. They also perceived the annual dinners as an effort to pacify the American Muslim community without necessarily creating the proper channels for discussions between the government and American Muslims. Many Muslims actively engaged with the government and other notable American Muslim leaders counter-argued that a lack of presence in Washington and at events like these is self-defeating, and will set the community back in efforts to make positive and perhaps realistic change.
