November 28, 2016 Ohio State University Apparent Terrorist Attack Police said they are investigating whether it was a terrorist attack when a fire alarm went off then a car with one person drove into the crowd outside and attacker got out of the car and started stabbing people before confronted by police and shot to death. Attacker was identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a Somali-born legal permanent resident of the U.S. Suspect is student who arrived to US as a refugee from Muslim nation of Somalia. CNN and authorities are now saying they have to look into possibility it was a terrorist attack, but are not commenting on nationality or religion of suspect as giving any clue to a possible Islamist terror motive. Attack is similar to St. Cloud Minnesota where a radicalized Somali student ran over a bicyclist and then started stabbing people yelling about Allah and asking victims if they were muslim before he suicidally charged a off duty police officer and was killed. FBI has not determined a terrorist motive for that incident either.

Suspect lived in Pakistan from 2007 to 2014. Left long rant about mistreatment of Muslims and cited Al Qaeda commander Anwar al Awlaki as a "hero". Motive still "unclear". Really???

On November 28, 2016, a car ramming attack and mass stabbing occurred at 9:52 a.m. EST at Ohio State University (OSU)'s Watts Hall in Columbus, Ohio. The attacker, identified as Somali refugee Abdul Razak Ali Artan, was shot and killed by the first responding OSU police officer, and 11 people were hospitalized for injuries. Authorities began investigating the possibility of the attack being an act of terrorism.

Attack[edit]

According to the chairman of the OSU Department of Materials Science and Engineering headquartered at Watts Hall, students told him that someone called in a fluorine leak in the building, which has lab facilities. As required during emergencies, the students congregated in the courtyard outside the building. At 9:52 a.m.,^[1] the attacker drove a Honda Civic into the courtyard, deliberately striking several pedestrians^[3]^[4]^[5] before crashing into a brick wall.^[6] He then got out of the car, armed with a butcher knife, and began attacking students.^[4] One student described a man with a knife, "chasing people around trying to attack them."^[7] Another witness recounted that the attacker did not say anything as he stabbed people.^[6]

According to media reports, at least 11 people were injured, and at least eight of them required hospital treatment. One injured victim was reportedly in critical condition.^[2] The victims included seven students, one faculty member, and one university worker, while the remainder had as-of-yet unknown backgrounds.^[8]

Initial reports had stated that there was an active shooter incident.^[9] At 9:56 a.m. EST, Ohio State University's emergency Twitter page tweeted, "Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College."^[10] Police claimed that as of 10:19 a.m. EST, the attacker had been killed by an officer after failing to comply to the officer's orders to put down his weapon.^[2]^[11]^[12] An academic adviser who witnessed the attack described seeing the assailant charging at police, who fired and shot him multiple times.^[6]

The scene was declared secure and the shelter in place order was lifted on the OSU campus at around 11:30 a.m. EST.^[13]Subsequent Twitter posts indicated the order may have been lifted prematurely and that at least one building was still on lockdown at 12:23 p.m. EST.^[14]

Emergency response[edit]

Eight patients were sent to OSU Wexner Medical Center, Grant Medical Center, and Riverside Methodist Hospital.^[15] None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.^[16] Most of the injured were struck by the vehicle, at least two suffered stab wounds, and one victim had a fractured skull.^[17]

The first officer to respond to the scene of the attack was Alan Horujko, a campus officer who happened to be nearby because of a reported gas leak. Horujko shot and killed the assailant within a minute after the attack started.^[17] Tactical teams, negotiators, a K-9 unit, and a bomb squad were dispatched to the scene and arrived at 10:06 a.m.^[11]^[18]^[19] The FBI's Cincinnati office announced that its agents were assisting campus police in the investigation. Agents from the local Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) unit were also dispatched to the scene of the attack.^[20]

Upper Arlington and Grandview schools were locked down for a short time while police investigated the incident. The Ohio Department of Transportation temporarily closed ramp access to and from Route 315 at Lane Avenue and Medical Center Drive.^[4]

Abdul Razak Ali Artan (c. 1998^{[citation needed]} – November 28, 2016) was a Muslim Somali refugee and legal permanent resident of the United States who had been a logistics management major in the Max M. Fisher College of Businessat the time of the attack.^[21]^[22]^[23]^[24]

Artan was the third-eldest of seven children. He alleged that he was born in a refugee camp after his family fled Somalia.^[25] However, a senior U.S. government official said that Artan left Somalia with the rest of his family in 2007, and that they spent seven years in a refugee camp in Pakistan. He moved to the U.S. on refugee visa with six family members in 2014.^[2]^[26] Artan and his family lived together in four units of an apartment at the Havenwood Townhomes complex in the West Side.^[2]^[27] He was described by neighbors as a consistently polite man who always "attended daily prayer services at a mosque" in Columbus.^[28]

Artan previously attended Columbus State Community College from the fall of 2014 to the summer of 2016, and graduated cum laude with an Associate of Arts degree,^[29] after which he transferred to OSU.^[30]^[31]^[32] He had no disciplinary record at Columbus State.^[25] Artan had worked at a Home Depot in Columbus for less than a year.^[33]

In August, on his first day at OSU, Artan was interviewed by The Lantern, the school newspaper. In the interview, he said that he was having trouble finding a place to pray in comparison to his old school at Columbus State, which provided private prayer rooms. Artan added that he was scared about other people's opinions of him because of the negative portrayal of Muslims in the media.^[26]^[32]^[34]^[35]

Investigation[edit]

The FBI and ATF became involved in the investigation.^[20] Though the investigation is ongoing, police have not concretely ruled out terrorism as a motive.^[30] There had been high concerns from federal law enforcement officials, about car ramming and stabbing attacks that are being encouraged by online extremist propaganda due to their relative ease in committing them compared to bombings;^[26] both methods "are now established forms of aggression inspired by" ISIL.^[20] In recent weeks, the ISIL had been urging its followers to copy a car ramming attack in Nice, France.^[36] The OSU attack followed a mass stabbingat the Crossroads Center shopping mall in September, where a Somali refugee also stabbed nearly a dozen people; the incident was also being investigated as a possible act of terrorism.^[25]

Though two people were taken into custody in the immediate aftermath of the attack,^[16] Artan was ultimately believed to have been acting alone by police.^[8] His apartment was searched by the FBI and a Franklin County Sheriff's Office bomb squad.^[37]^[27] Sometime after the attack, the FBI began examination of a Facebook post, purportedly written by Artan about human rights in Myanmar, which read: "I am sick and tired of seeing [Muslims] killed [and] tortured EVERYWHERE. ... I can't take it anymore. America! Stop interfering with other countries ... [if] you want us Muslims to stop carrying [out] lone wolf attacks." The post also mentioned radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.^[2]^[38]^[39] The FBI also began a search into Artan's digital history to see if he had contact with suspected terrorists or had access to terrorist propaganda.^[39]

Reactions[edit]

Governor John Kasich tweeted his condolences to the school community and urged people to "listen to first responders".^[20]He later praised the "professional, coordinated response" of first responders in another official statement.^[40] Mayor Andrew Ginther offered his "thoughts and prayers" to the victims and other students,^[41] and later praised the actions of Alan Horujko and other law enforcement officers.^[16] In a Facebook post, President-elect Donald Trump thanked the first responders present at the scene of the attack.^[42] Vice President-elect Mike Pence called the attack "tragic" and expressed his condolences.^[28]President Barack Obama was briefed on the attack.^[40]

The attack was condemned by several leaders of Muslim organizations and mosques in the Columbus area, who also cautioned against "jumping to conclusions or blaming a religion or ethnicity".^[28] Omar Hassan, president of the Somali Community Association of Ohio, expressed concerns that the attack would strengthen anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment in the area. He said, "The timing is not good. We are black. We are Muslim. We are Somali. We are all the negative stigmas."^[25]

Abdul Razak Ali Artan has been identified as the assailant behind a stabbing attack at OSU’s Columbus campus Monday morning
He has been described as a Somali refugee and a logistics management student at the school
Fire alarm was pulled at Watts Hall just before 10am and Artan reportedly mowed down evacuating students and staff with his car
He then got out of the vehicle and started slashing victims with a knife injuring 11 – including one critically
Responding OSU police officer Alan Harujko, 28, shot Artan dead after he failed to respond to commands
Two other men were taken from the scene in handcuffs, but police now believe there was only one attacker
The shelter in place was lifted just after 11:30am
Attack comes after ISIS’ call for jihadists to use knife attacks as they’re the most widely available weapons

Somali refugee Abdul Razak Ali Artan posted on Facebook that he was ‘sick and tired of seeing my fellow Muslim brothers being killed and tortured’ shortly before he went on a slashing rampage at the Ohio State University that left 11 injured.
Authorities are currently investigating the posts, allegedly made by Artan, which mention radical cleric Anwar Awlaki and accuse America of ‘interfering’ with other nations.
‘I am sick and tired of seeing my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters being killed and tortured EVERYWHERE,’ it stated. ‘I can’t take it anymore.

CBS news has reported that the suspect was a 20-year-old Somali man. The car was reportedly registered to Mohamed Ali. The attack occurred outside of Watts Hall at West 19th, just west of College. Watts Hall had been evacuated previously because of a report of a gas leak. It’s unclear if that was related to the attack.
