Washington Post: Yuri I. Nosenko, a former lieutenant colonel in the Soviet secret police and intelligence agency, told his new American friends that he had important information: He had handled Lee Harvey Oswald’s KGB surveillance file during his time in the Soviet Union in the late 1950s and early 1960s — and determined that Oswald was not working for the Soviets when he carried out Kennedy’s assassination. The fact that Oswald had lived for three years in the Soviet Union led many Americans to believe he might have killed JFK at the behest of the Kremlin. If such suspicions had proved correct, the Cold War might have turned hot.
