9 January 2016. Murder of Ashley Ann Olsen Ashley Ann Olsen was an American artist whose murder in her Florence, Italy apartment in 2016 drew international attention.[1][2]  Marks on her neck indicated that she had been strangled to death. Cheik Tidiane Diaw, a 27-year-old Senegalese national who is in Italy as an illegal immigrant, was arrested for the crime.  Cheik Tidiane Diaw confessed to the crime, telling officers he strangled Olsen with a USB cord after they had sex and she told him he had to leave because her boyfriend was coming back, according to Daily Mail. Her skull was also fractured, but Diaw claims the death was an accident.. The police investigator on the case, Giacinto Profazio, was involved in the Amanda Knox and Meredith Kercher ex-pat murder case

Olsen was from a wealthy family in Summer Haven, Florida. She moved to Florence in 2012 with the intention of studying art and in order to live near her father, who teaches at an American school in Florence.^[2][3]

Murder and investigation[edit]

Olsen, 35, was found dead in her apartment in the Santo Spirito neighborhood of Florence by her boyfriend, Florentine artist Federico Fiorentini, on 9 January 2016.^[3] Marks on her neck indicated that she had been strangled to death.^[4]

Cheik Tidiane Diaw, a 27-year-old Senegalese national who is in Italy as an illegal immigrant, was arrested for the crime.^[1] Witnesses and saw the two leave a nightclub in Florence together Jan. 7. Security cameras in the street recorded them walking to Olsen's apartment in the early hours of 8 January.^[1]

The police investigator on the case, Giacinto Profazio, was involved in the Amanda Knox and Meredith Kercher ex-pat murder case.^[2]
