In Seattle, Washington, a group of 3 to 5 masked men approached a group sitting around a fire at the Jungle homeless camp under a freeway. They opened fire in a mass shooting, killing two and injuring three. Jeannine L. Zapata, 45, (Hispanic) and James Quoc Tran (Vietnamese Asian), 33, died of multiple gunshot wounds. They were soon identified by a witness, and arrested. Three teen brothers who are not identified because of their age told the informants they were either going to complete a drug deal, or collect a drug debt for their mother. However, it may have been a cover story to hide a true intent was to commit a mass shooting for terrorist or other unstated motives. The oldest brother was armed with a .45-caliber handgun and the 16-year-old carried a .22-caliber, and they took about $100 worth of black tar heroin and $200 or $300 in cash. In February 2014, the now-16-year-old was charged with robbery for stealing a backpack from a middle-school classmate armed with a Taser, and last February participated in a taxi cab carjacking and police chase that “was fun and exciting,” The eldest was charged last year with making false statements to a police officer and has previous convictions for robbery and theft.
