Bulgarian television reporter Viktoria Marinova's body was found in a park after she suffered blows to the head and was suffocated, mostly likely in daylight. Prosecutors said that she had been raped, suffocated and beaten with such force that her face was unrecognisable. A suspect was arrested who is Romanian with passport from Moldova. Bulgarian government officials announced there was no evidence to suggest the killing was linked to Marinova's work. Suspect had criminal record for scrap metal theft but appeared it was "a spontaneous attack, not premeditated, but were examining "all possible lines of investigation." (5)

Victoria Marinova (Bulgarian: Виктория Маринова; 1988 – 6 October 2018)^[1]was a Bulgarian TV host and journalist.

Biography[edit]

At the time of her death, Marinova was the administrative director of TVN Television in Ruse. On 30 September, 2018, she launched a new talk show called Detector, with a focus on investigative journalism.^[2]

Death[edit]

On the afternoon of October 7, 2018, Marinova's body was found in a riverside park in Ruse. She had been beaten and raped prior to being murdered,^[3] which the authorities believe happened during daylight.^[1] Marinova was the third journalist killed in the European Union in less than a year, after Daphne Caruana Galizia from Malta, and Jan Kuciak and his girlfriend from Slovakia.^[4]

According to the latest reports, he was a Romanian citizen of Ukrainian descent, probably a vagrant. DNA evidence did not match the one from the scene, and hence he has been released. In the last few hours reports have come in about a Bulgarian being arrested in Germany, but nothing official so far.
