Suspect Joshuale Matthews-Vincent Carter identified in Saturday night shooting of friend then CMPD police officer
Three people were shot, including a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer, during an incident in the Steele Creek area of southwest Charlotte Saturday night. The man accused of shooting the officer and another victim has been identified as 25-year-old Joshuale Matthews-Vincent Carter. Police say he is currently in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center. The officer, Lt. Andy Harris, had a superficial wound to the abdomen and has non-life-threatening injuries, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney at a 1 a.m. Sunday press conference. Harris was wearing a bullet-resistant vest that slowed the bullet and prevented more serious injuries. “He’s doing fine,” said Putney, who visited the officer at Carolinas Medical Center. “He was hit but it’s non-life-threatening, obviously — a superficial wound to his abdomen. Around 11 p.m. on Friday, the girl was at her Upper Darby front door, just returning home from work, when a man put a knife to her neck and demanded her handbag. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says the girl began screaming and her father and uncle, who were both inside the house, ran outside and chased the suspect. They caught the man, who stabbed the uncle in the shoulder, and held him until police arrived. The uncle was treated at a hospital and released. Twenty-seven-year-old Sultan Akbar-Abdullah is charged with three knifepoint purse robberies and is a suspect in two others.

The victim was Reverend Thomas Uzhunnalil, a Salesian priest, who was kidnapped in Yemen earlier this month during a raid on a Catholic nursing home run by Mother Teresa’s organisation Missionaries of Charity. Father Uzhunnalil, a native of India, was captured on March 4, in a raid which also killed 16 Christian nuns and nurses.
