If this was about his girlfriend and not terrorism, why is he armed like an Islamist style mass shooting terrorist with a rifle, handgun, magazines of ammunition and a tactical vest and engages in a gunfight with police?

The (white) Man was equipped for a terrorist mass shooting attack with a long gun, a hand gun and wearing a “tactical” vest loaded with ammunition magazines. A lawyer for the dead suspect says he had a history of mental illness.
