March 5, 2014 Woman Tormented By Demons Drives Minivan With Children Into Daytona Beach 32-year-old Ebony Wilkerson, of South Carolina drove her new Honda Odyssey minivan into the surf with her 3 children screaming "she's trying to kill us" as they were rescued by lifeguards. Her family thought she was acting odd when she left home with her children talking about Jesus and demons in the house. Police stopped her after he sister called 911 but found her "lucid, aware of her surroundings, able to care for herself and her children, and showed no signs of meeting the requirements of the Baker Act," a Florida mental health care act permitting involuntary examination, so they let her on her way. She later told police she was taking her children to a safe place away from her ex-husband who she feared would track them down and harm them.

pregnant mom who drove kids into ocean at Daytona Beach charged with attempted murder The pregnant mother who wildly drove her three children into the surf at a Florida beach was booked on a slew of charges that included attempted murder and child abuse, authorities said. Ebony Wilkerson, 32, was arrested after her release Friday from a local hospital, where she has been under evaluation since the apparent murder-suicide bid at Daytona Beach, authorities said. Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson told reporters that Wilkerson was cuffed after several interviews with the woman’s children — ages 10, 9 and 3 — and several witnesses. “She actually told them to close their eyes and go to sleep, ‘I’m taking you to a better place,’” Johnson said. “The fact that she did intentionally try to kill the children...this is a tragic event.” Wilkerson, who is nearly seven months pregnant, was driving erratically along the shoreline near Silver Beach Ave. when she suddenly veered into the ocean on Tuesday. “Her son was actually trying to fight her for the steering wheel,” Johnson said.

According to Wilkerson's sister, Jessica Harrell, the 32-year-old woman was trying to escape from an abusive spouse when she drove from her home in South Carolina to stay with her in Florida.
'Her husband beat on her, so she came down to my house from South Carolina,' said Jessica Harrell in a call to a 911 dispatcher just hours before Wilkerson attempted to end her life by driving her minivan into the surf.
Harrell, 28, asked the operator to send officers to perform a welfare check because her sibling appeared emotionally distraught.

Florida court records show Wilkerson had previously been cited in a fatal car wreck that occurred in Delray Beach on Feb. 23, 2007. Wilkerson changed lanes on Interstate 95, causing the driver of the other car to lose control and crash into a concrete barrier, the Sun Sentinel newspaper in Broward County reported at the time. The passenger, 35-year-old Jennifer Krane, was critically injured but died two weeks later, according to her obituary. Wilkerson was cited for improper lane change, according to court records. Her driver's license was suspended for a year and she was ordered to serve 132 hours of community service, court records stated.
Wilkerson's sister, Jessica Harrell, called 911 worried about Wilkerson's well-being. During the call, Harrell told the operator her sister was being abused by her husband, according to the recording, obtained from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Harrell also said she had checked Wilkerson into the hospital Monday, but she had signed herself out the next day, according to the recording. "She's getting a little bit better, but she's still not all here," Harrell told the operator. "She's trying to drive and I'm trying to stop her."
In order to keep her from leaving the house, Harrell said she took away her sister's keys to the van, which is registered to Wilkerson's husband in South Carolina, according to the 911 call.During the phone call, Harrell told the operator her sister had found another set of keys and had taken off
