Investigators still aren't sure exactly what happened – and now they're trying to solve the deadly mystery. Omaha Interim Fire Chief Bernie Kanger said the investigation could take weeks. He also noted there were no hazardous chemicals at the plant, which makes products that are added to livestock and poultry feed to make them more nutritious.

Omaha World-Herald reports that two people have been confirmed dead in the plant explosion that took place on Monday. Ten others were taken to area hospitals, four in critical condition.
The paper also reports that at a press conference this afternoon Interim Omaha Fire Chief Bernie Kanger said additional workers remained trapped inside.

Fire officials say people have died in an explosion at an animal feed processing plant near Omaha, Neb., but won't yet say how many.
The Associated Press quotes Kanger as saying crews have stopped rescue efforts and would start a slow recovery process to retrieve victims.

Thirty-eight people were believed to be inside the International Nutrition plant when the explosion took place at about 11 a.m. ET on Monday.

GUIYANG, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- An explosion in a village in southwest China's Guizhou province caused 18 casualties Monday, local government said. The explosion occurred around 2:30 p.m. at Laoshan village in the city of Kaili, sources with the city's publicity department said, declining to clarify the exact deaths and injuries. The provincial government has urged local authorities to spare no efforts in treating the injured. Investigation into the case is now in full swing.

    September 20, 2013 UC Berkeley Explosion After Power Failure Explosion at University of California Berkeley at 8:30 p.m. after a power outage at 4:30 p.m. It sent flames two stories high two lanes wide, and sent a manhole cover into the air. It was suspected to be related to theft of copper wire thieves off campus. Campus was evacuated, and one person hospitalized for minor burns. It was a sophisticated attack that stole or sabotaged key parts of their system and classes would be cancelled until safety can be established. 20 students were stranded in elevators in dormitories. An engineer stated "Somebody attacked our system. Somebody stole key parts of our system." No one is asking if terrorism could be a motive.

    la times: He said the blast area was two stories high and two roadway lanes wide and sent at least one manhole cover shooting into the air. Ripping the wire out of the system required a lot of force and probably special equipment, Mogulof said. The explosion took place as engineers were attempting to bring power back up.
    "Something happened here that surprised the experts," he said. "Somebody attacked our system. Somebody stole key parts of our system."
    The campus remained dark Monday night except for the lights of police vehicles patrolling the area and emergency generators providing power for research projects.
    Mogulof said classes "aren't going to happen and people aren't going to come back here until we're sure we have a safe situation."
