Scout Schultz
Scout Schultz was born as Scott Schultz in Rockville, Maryland circa 1996.[1][2] They later moved to Lilburn, Georgia with their family.[1][3] They were a computer engineering major in their fourth year at Georgia Institute of Technology,[1][4] and expected to graduate a semester early according to their father.[2] Schultz identified as "bisexual, nonbinary and intersex" and used singular they pronouns.[5] They were the president of Pride Alliance on campus.[4][3]
Schultz, who suffered from clinical depression, had spent time in counseling after attempting suicide by hanging in 2015.[6]

Shooting
The shooting occurred late on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 532 8th Street NW on the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia.[7]
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that a 9-1-1 was received around 11:17 p.m. for "a person with a knife and a gun"[7] and that Schultz was the one who called 911.[8] However, Schultz had no gun, and while they were carrying a multitool that included a pocketknife, the blade was not extended. Schultz reportedly called in that a white male was carrying a weapon, and appeared to be intoxicated.[6]
Schultz refused to drop the knife and continued to walk towards the police while shouting, "Shoot me!".[1] Schultz was shot by a police officer,[7] and shortly after, pronounced dead at the Grady Memorial Hospital.[7]
Aftermath and reactions
Schultz's family attorney, Chris Stewart, said the police overreacted.[4] Stewart claimed that this was not a "suicide by cop."[6] He added, "The area was secured. There was no one around at risk."[5]
Schultz's mother, Lynne Schultz, suggested the police should have used "pepper spray or Tasers" instead of gunning them down.[6] According to a spokesman, Georgia Tech police are equipped with the former but not the latter.[8]
G. P. "Bud" Peterson, the president of Georgia Tech, said the shooting was a "heart-wrenchingly painful time" for the university.[9]
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that 3 suicide notes were found in Schultz's dorm room.[8]
Vigil and protest
A vigil for Schultz was held on September 18. The vigil turned violent and about 50 people were arrested; a police car was set on fire and an individual was taken to a hospital. Schultz's parents appealed for calm.[10][11]
