November 18, 2016 crime: arson, attempted murder injured: 26 suspect Myanmar Rohingya Refugee Arsonist Melbourne Bank Fire Myanmar asylum seeker who was not a terrorist set himself on fire at Australian bank in Melbourne. Nur Islam was the man identified by authorities as the suspect who was from Australia's Muslim Rohingya community who fled oppression from Myanmar. He set not only himself on fire in a bank, but committed an arson attack which injured 26 people. Nevetheless, Victoria's Premier Daniel Andrews calling the incident an isolated event, and said there was no suggestion the suspect was motivated by terrorist ideologies and shouldn’t be used as a “political fuel" to use against immigration policies. The suspect had recently become homeless with money troubles and a welfare payment issues, and was said to be battling mental health issues in the lead-up to the incident.
