- 1 killed November 21, 2014 Red Star Serbian Belgrade Fan Is Killed Before Basketball Game in Istanbul Belgrade fan was stabbed to death in fan violence before the team’s Euroleague basketball match at Galatasaray in Istanbul... trying to make sure that all Red Star fans leave Turkey safely as soon as possible. answsers: Bosnians converted to Islam in large numbers during Ottoman rule in the Balkans (1500's-1900's) to avoid persecution, discrimination, taxation and other penalties imposed on Christian populations there under Ottoman control i.e Turks. The Serbs & Croats for the most part did not convert to Islam in large numbers and remained overtly Orthodox Christian & Catholic. Their neighbors particularly felt a strong sense of hatred towards Bosnians not only because of the abuses of the Ottoman Empire and their privileged position as a result of converting to Islam, but also because they were perceived as "traitors" to their nation who chose the easy way out by converting to Islam while their Christian relatives,brothers,and sisters suffered. The Bosnians were (and still are) referred to disparagingly as "Turks" and seen as the foreign remnants of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans who need to be "ethnically cleansed" from Bosnia, to revert back to the Christian status quo that existed before the Ottomans invaded
