International Conference on Hollywoodism

The International Conference on Hollywoodism, sometimes known as the Conference on Hollywoodism and Cinema, is a conference held on several occasions in the early 2010s and organized by the government of Iran.[1] By its own description, it "host[s] filmmakers, scholars and activists from around the world to discuss different aspects of world cinema as they relate to human ideals on one hand and the realities of Hollywood on the other."[2] In particular, the conference served to criticize the United States film industry's portrayals of Islam and Iran.[3] It took place in Tehran in February each year, coincident to and within the framework of the Fajr International Film Festival.[2]
Attendees to the conferences have included Iranian analysts[3] as well as foreign commentators of various sorts.[1][3][4] For example, Monica Witt attended in 2012 and 2013 editions of the conference.[5] The conference put out a call for papers and has promised monetary prizes to the top articles selected.[6] Guests have been given copies of up to twenty films to watch as part of their attendance.[4] Organizers have sometimes funded the travel expenses of those coming from abroad.[3][4]

History[edit]

2011 and 2012 conferences[edit]

The inaugural conference was a two-day seminar held in 2011. It covered topics such as "Terrorism and Hollywood" and "Hollywood and Satanism".[7]
The 2012 conference brought 48 international guests, who engaged in discussion on "Hollywood and Holocaust", "Palestine on the Line of Fire", and "Darwinism and Liberalism".[7] President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad opened the conference, honoring actor and attendee Sean Stone, a recent Muslim convert and the son of the filmmaker Oliver Stone.[8] Other attendees included Webster Tarpley,[8] an American conspiracy theorist.[9] The Tehran Times reported that several speakers touched upon a purported "influence of the Zionist regime on Hollywood."[8]

2013 conference[edit]

The 2013 edition of the conference included some 130 foreigners brought to Tehran by the government[1] for four days of sessions[10] with 1,000 expected attendees.[3]Hamed Ghashghavi[11] was the Secretary on International Affairs of the conference. He contacted and invited figures such as Dieudonné M'bala M'balaKenneth O'KeefeMuhammad al-Asi; Imam Abdul Alim MusaMerlin MillerHolocaust deniers Mark WeberJim Fetzer and Kevin Barrett, Paul-Éric Blanrue, 9/11 conspiracy theorists Roberto QuagliaArt Olivier and Thierry MeyssanF. William EngdahlWilliam Rodriguez, and Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, the wife of Carlos the Jackal.
The conference has been held at the Parsian Azadi Hotel.[3] It was opened by Javad Shamaqdari, Iran Cinema Organization Director[10] and deputy cultural minister for cinema affairs,.[3][12] Iranian Culture Minister Mohammad Hosseini was also present.[3]
Conference discussion paid special attention to the effects upon American public opinion of the 2012 U.S. film Argo, a narratively fictionalised rendition of aspects of the 1979–1981 Iran hostage crisis that had been nominated for several Academy Awards.[1] Also screened and discussed were the 2010 film Unthinkable and the 2011 film Jerusalem Countdown, among others.[10] While many attendees held the notion that U.S. films served to promote a secret agenda they called "Hollywoodism", they often differed in their approaches.[1]
Among the 2013 attendees was former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Mike Gravel, who had previously been a frequent interviewee of Iran's state-sponsored PressTV.[4] Gravel said that the U.S. film industry had brainwashed the American public regarding what to think of Iran.[1] He also said the conference featured "various elements of extremes", some of whose attitudes against Israel and Zionism were "off the charts".[4] Another attendee was Iranian political strategist Hassan Abbasi, who is known for Zionist conspiracy theories involving the cartoon characters Tom and Jerry[1] and who said of watching American films, "The images you see pollute your sexual fantasies."[1] E. Michael Jones, editor of an American conservative Christian magazine, said he was impressed by how the host country had desexualised their culture: "There was a reason Iranians burned their cinemas during the revolution."[1] Abdul Alim Musa, said Islamic peoples were being subjected to a "cultural invasion" by Western film.[1]

E. Michael Jones and yours truly at the 2013 Hollywoodism conference in Tehran, “the capital of the free world.”
The Justice (sic) Department just charged US military whistleblower Monica Witt with spying for Iran—and sanctioned the Iranian NGO New Horizons. The charges against Witt allege that Press TV news anchor Marzieh Hashemi is in the business of recruiting spies, and was somehow responsible for Monica Witt’s decision to move to Iran. Yet not a single shred of evidence supporting these allegations has been made public. And Marzieh Hashemi has not been charged with any crime—even though the FBI kidnapped her and held her for ten days as a “material witness” in the Witt case. It looks like Ms. Hashemi has a slam-dunk libel case against whoever wrote up the charges against Witt. (Oh, I forgot—the government can commit libel with impunity.)

First hour: US military whistleblower Scott Bennett, like Monica Witt, witnessed horrific crimes committed by the US government—and its ultra-corrupt contractor Booz Allen. And Scott Bennett, like Monica Witt, first visited Iran to participate in a conference sponsored by the New Horizons NGO. (Witt attended the Feb. 2013 Hollywoodism Conference, where I met her, while Bennett attended last May’s Palestine conference in Mashhad.) So let’s ask Scott Bennett what he thinks about the Witt case, New Horizons, and Iran. (Obviously if New Horizons were really a front for recruiting spies, they would have tried to “turn” Scott, who was in the thick of US military antiterrorism efforts before he blew the whistle on his Booz Allen boss Dov Zakheim’s financing of ISIS and al Qaeda.) We’ll also discuss the likely real reason for the whole Witt/New Horizons witch hunt: the initiative launched at the Mashhad conference by Scott and ex-US-military-intel folks to convince Iran to take the fight for 9/11 truth into an American federal courtroom.

Second hour: E. Michael Jones, editor of Culture Wars, participated in the 2013 New Horizons sponsored Hollywoodism Conference in Tehran where I met Monica Witt. Did he meet her too? What does he think of the US government’s claim that New Horizons is a front for recruiting spies? And how about its evidence-free calumnies directed at Marzieh Hashemi?

Spoiler: E. Michael Jones was so impressed by the New Horizons Hollywoodism conference that he started calling Tehran “the capital of the free world.” Why would a leading conservative Catholic intellectual be so impressed by Iran’s atmosphere of intellectual freedom in general, and the New Horizons NGO in particular?

Iran kicked off its anti-America and anti-Israel New Horizon Conference as the final part of the 13th International Resistance Film Festival in Tehran. The three-day conference opened on September 29 and marks the second time Tehran has hosted the event. According to organizers, the event will include “tens of elite thinkers, philosophers, activists and politicians worldwide” who will discuss and “expose” Zionist control of the film industry and the influence of the “Zionist lobby in America.”

As in the previous conference, this year’s New Horizon Conference has drawn the participation of several anti-Israel activists, anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists and Holocaust deniers. A new presence at the conference is the participation of a so called American anti-war activist, Medea Benjamin, a co-founder of CODEPINK.

In addition to Benjamin, the conference’s official website published the names of several American and international anti-Semites, anti-Israel activists and Holocaust deniers that are expected to be in attendance, including Maria Poumier, a French conspiracy theorist and Holocaust denier; Claudio Moffa, an Italian Holocaust denier; Kevin Barrett, an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist and frequent contributor to Iran’s English language propaganda news network, Press TV; Garth Porter, an anti-Israel journalist; Pepe Escobar, a Brazilian anti-Israel journalist; and Art Olivier, a former elected official from California and 9/11 conspiracy theorist.
