Federal Judge Rules Suit Challenging CBP’s Turnaways of Asylum Seekers at the Border Can Proceed press@ccrjustice.org    August 24, 2018, San Diego – A federal judge ruled this week that a lawsuit challenging U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) practice of turning away asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border can proceed. The lawsuit was brought by the Los Angeles and Tijuana-based organization Al Otro Lado, Inc., as well as individual asylum seekers who are collectively represented by the American Immigration Council, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Southern Poverty Law Center and an international law firm. The complaint challenges CBP’s systematic denial of the right to access the asylum process, forcing individuals fleeing persecution to return to countries where they face grave danger and the risk of death. CBP had asked the court to dismiss the case altogether, which the judge denied in this ruling.  “Thousands of refugees fleeing for their lives have been unlawfully denied the right to seek protection in the United States. We are heartened that the Court recognized the U.S. government’s legal obligations to accept asylum seekers at our southern border,” said Erika Pinheiro, Litigation and Policy Director at Al Otro Lado.

Al Otro Lado (To The Other Side). Directed By: Natalia Almada. Produced In: USA/Mexico, 2006. Running Time: 60 minutes. Genre: Documentary. Language ...Synopsis:
"Al Otro Lado (To the Other Side)" tells the human story behind illegal immigration and drug trafficking between the U.S. and Mexico through the eyes of Magdiel, a 23-year-old fisherman and aspiring composer who dreams of a better life. For people south of the border, the "other side" is the dream of an impossibly rich United States, where even menial jobs can support families and whole communities that have been left behind. For people north of the border, "Al Otro Lado" sheds light on harsh choices that their neighbors to the south often face because of economic crisis.

As movingly chronicled in "Al Otro Lado," Natalia Almada's debut feature, the border is a place where one people's dreams collide with another people's politics, and the 200-year-old tradition of corrido music vibrantly chronicles it all. In fact, if you really want to understand what is happening on the U.S./Mexico border, listen to the corridos, troubadour-like ballads that have become the voice of people whose views are rarely heard in mainstream media.

In a tweet posted by BAMN on Nov. 29, the group called for the migrants to march at 11 a.m. on Dec. 1 Trevor Loudon, a communism expert and contributor to The Epoch Times, said BAMN is “hard core.”  NGO that has been helping coach migrants about U.S. asylum laws also lashed out at BAMN in a series of tweets on Nov. 30.  “BAMN is agitating the caravan to march on the border. They are not on the ground and not working with the caravan organizers,” the NGO Al Otro Lado (To the Other Side) wrote on Twitter.  The group goes a step further, suggesting a conspiracy between BAMN and the U.S. government.  “Either BAMN has a government mole, or they ARE the US government, because the gov’t knew way more about their planned march than the caravan
