April 25, 2019 Rogel Aguilera-Mederos Deadly Truck Brake Failure Crash Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos is a Texas semi driver who was arrested and faces four counts of vehicular homicide after police said he caused a deadly 28-vehicle crash which killed 4 on I-70 in Colorado on Interstate 70 just after it descends from the mountains west of Denver. [1l He is a legal permanent resident from Cuba with a Green Card, a valid drivers license, no criminal record and there was no evidence crash was related to drugs or alcohol. Authorities saw no evidence the crash was intentional as he said he lost control as brakes were showing signs of failure and he closed his eyes in fear before his semi truck slammed into backed up traffic. The crash occurred April 25 The pileup involved 28 vehicles and multiple explosions. held on $400,000 bond, told investigators the brakes on his semitrailer failed. [1l Police say Aguilera-Mederos told them he was going only 25 miles per hour in the section of the highway where video shows him passing runaway truck signs and running a vehicle off the road[3] Prosecutors accuse him of driving recklessly at 85 mph [7] where commercial vehicles are limited to 45 mph, police have said.[6] Video shows the driver ignored or avoided multiple “runaway truck ramp” signs for stopping trucks with failed brakes with flashing yellow lights as he flew down the highway. [3] He had a "free and unobstructed path" to the ramp but instead swerved away from it, police have said. [6]
The truck company inspections showed some brake issues and a total of 30 vehicle and driver violations resulting from 19 inspections over a two-year period [8] Lawyer Rob Corry says the driver was over charged, and says no one will drive if every accident becomes a homicide and a violent crime with a deadly weapon, and says it is "patently obvious that there was a mechanical failure in the brakes. There's no other plausible explanation. Once you rule out the driver being suicidal — which Rogel clearly isn't, and everybody agrees on that" [9]
He told police he suddenly noticed that he was driving 85 in a 45 zone (other drives say he might have been doing 100) His brakes failed, and his emergency brake failed so he failed to notice the brake failure exit for trucks (some say he swerved away) and before crashing he closed his eyes (other witnesses said he eyes were wide open and terrified). His lawyer says it was an unfortunate accident but he was arrested and faces four counts of vehicular homicide. In contrast to deadly incidents caused by illegal immigrants, the drive was Cuban national and is working in the U.S. with a green card.[2] krdo 4/25/2019 rear end crash At least a dozen cars, three semi-trucks involved in crash in Denver, Colorado.
