  • NOVA' Program Highlights Forensics Investigation Of KennedyAssassination
  • insidescience.org forensic scientists, Lucien and Michael Haag, a father and son studied the Italian Mannlicher-Carcano rifle.  Tests show that Oswald used an unusual Italian rifle with an unusual long cylindrical full metal jacket bullet which gripped the barrel and was extremely stable. They showed it could penetrate 3 ft of wood, and that it would probably tumble after hitting one person. The bullet showed a damaged squashed profile with some lead leakage consistent with an oblique hit after tumbling. It fully explaining how one bullet could penetrate the neck of JFK and then leave an oblong entry wound in the governor and then strike his hand. The second bullet broke apart in his head, consistent with a rear entry that destroyed the right upper quarter of the skull, and reconstruction of x-rays are also consistent with a rear entry. JFK falling backwards and audio evidence suggested a grassy knoll shot by a second shooter in a 1970s inquiry. But while the geometry was possible, it was not consistent with observed injuries, and echos could account for sounds of more than 3 shots, while a backwards jerk would be caused by nerve reflexes after being shot. None of the conspiracy theorists knew anything about firearms forsenics.

  • CBS News: Nova demonstrates magic bullet theory Luke Haag said it's "easily" demonstrable that one bullet can go through two people "if you understand how this particular unusual bullet behaves and what does after it leaves Kennedy's body." The 6.5 millimeter Carcano bullet made by Olin Winchester is "extremely stable," Luke Haag said. "People didn't understand then and don't understand now. It will go through a lot of material, and then when it comes out it starts tumbling ... and that's how it hit Connally." Luke Haag explained, "It's like a badly thrown football. It normally flies true and straight. When this bullet emerged from Kennedy -- or any ballistic medium ... it's now yawing and tumbling. The entry wound in Connally is very important because it's the consequence of a yawed bullet, so it had to be a destabilized bullet from somewhere." Asked if he believes it was just one bullet, Michael Haag said, "As far as the neck wounds to the president and the wounds to John Connally, absolutely."  "If the bore in the rifle is good, it's a good shooter and it was a good shooter, unfortunately for President Kennedy."

  • wikipedia single bullet theory The single-bullet theory (or Magic Bullet Theory, as it is commonly called by its critics) was introduced by the Warren Commissionin its investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to explain what happened to the bullet which struck Kennedy in the back and exited through his throat. Given the lack of damage to the presidential limousine consistent with it having been struck by a high-velocity bullet and the fact that Texas Governor John Connally was wounded and was seated directly in front of the president, the Commission concluded they were likely struck by the same bullet.  The single-bullet theory has been staunchly defended by those who believe the Warren Commission's finding was correct; it has been roundly criticized by those who disagree.

  • wikipedia: John F. Kennedy assassination rifle  In March 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald, using the alias "A. Hidell," purchased a 6.5 mm Carcano Model 91/38 carbine (also improperly called Mannlicher-Carcano) by mail order.[1] He also purchased a revolver from a different company, by the same method.[2] It is officially accepted that this was the rifle that was used in the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, Texas to assassinate United States President John F. Kennedy as his motorcade drove by on November 22, 1963.[3] Photographs of Oswald holding the rifle, apalmprint found upon examination of the rifle, and detective work tracing its sale, all eventually led to Oswald.[4] During his Marine Corps service in December 1956, Oswald scored a rating of sharpshooter (twice achieving 48 and 49 out of 50 shots during rapid fire at a stationary target 200 yards [183 m] away using a standard issue M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle), although in May 1959, he qualified as a marksman (a lower classification than that of sharpshooter). Military experts, after examining his records, characterized his firearms proficiency as "above average" and said he was, when compared to American civilian males of his age, "an excellent shot"
