November 2, 2018 James Polite Black Democrat Synagogue Vandalism Suspect A gay African American anti-hate Democratic party activist City Hall employee was arrested after writing hateful graffiti saying “Die Jew Rats” and “Hitler” at the Jewish synagogue Union Temple of Brooklyn in New York.
A political event with two Democratic candidates featuring "Broad City" star Ilana Glazer was set to hold an event at the Union Temple of Brooklyn was canceled after attendees found hateful graffiti saying “Die Jew Rats” and “Hitler” in black marker which one of the candidates said highlighted the need to vote out “hate.” Police arrested 26-year old James Polite later that night based on surveillance footage, and was committed to the psychiatric ward at the Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn because of erratic behavior during the arrest. Drawings of the Puerto Rican flag, and the words “Free PR” were written in black marker on walls, apparently raising a false flag frame a nationalist movement not noted for anti-semitism (1) Polite is not Puerto Rican but an African American man (4) Police also suspect Polite of setting a series of small trash fires in and around synagogues in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Williamsburg has a large orthodox Jewish community. Polite was featured in a 2017 New York Times profile as a “queer” black man informally adopted by a Jewish couple. The New York Times’ charity, the Neediest Cases, helped pay for college where he focused on identify politics and African American studies. He was a City Hall employee who worked on anti-hate crime issues and is a Democratic activist. On his facebook profile he resented New York liberals as patronizing, and railed against Israel and cultural appropriation (1)
The graffiti attack was just hours after November 1 when the African Burial Ground Monument in New York City was vandalized with the word "kill" followed by a racial slur written in black marker (5)
