November 3, 2018 Girl Scout Hit and Run Huffing Driver 4 girl scouts and a mother were killed and another girl injured while they were picking up roadside garbage along a rural Wisconsin highway in Lake Hallie when a pickup veered out of his lane, crossed the center line, hit the people entirely by accident, and ended up in a ditch before fleeing the scene. When authorities caught up with the driver, they were told by 21-year-old Colten Treu and passenger that they were huffing compressed gases which does not explain the improbability of scoring the vehicular equivlant of bowling a strike, hitting all of the pins entirely by accident without careful aim. In January vehicular homicide charges were filed against Colten Treu who authorities say inhaled chemical vapors, and drug-related charges including posession of math were filed in Rusk County. Treu had already been investigated after he drove his vehicle into a ditch in September, about a month before the fatal crash(2) Colten Treu, 21, and his roommate later told authorities there had been a fight for the wheel as they saw the scouts and the car started drifting towards the scouts but they differ in their accounts of how it steered into a crash. According to Stender, he grabbed the wheel to correct Treu's driving after noticing Treu looked "out of it" and crossed over the center line, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Stender said Treu yelled at him, grabbed the wheel, and swerved hard, causing the car to jerk back in the direction of the Girl Scouts.
"Mr Stender stated the next thing he recalled is waking up down the road," the complaint said, according to the Leader-Telegram.
However, Treu claims he didn't pass out and said he had only taken two short huffs from the can of Dustoff both men were using before the crash. He told investigators Stender had been huffing heavily and grabbed the wheel causing Treu to lose control of the vehicle, the complaint said.
Treu told investigators he saw the group of seven girls and five adults before he crashed into them
Stender has not been charged, and it's not clear yet whether any charges are expected for his involvement in the crash.
Colten R. Treu is believed to have been driving while impaired on Sept. 30 when he swerved off the road, went into a ditch and rolled his vehicle,
allegedly discovered meth and marijuana in the vehicle; however, Treu has not yet been charged in the incident. According to Newell, Treu also has a 2014 drunk driving conviction.
