Jeffrey Yao Alleged Winchester Library Stabbing Two stabbed, one fatally at Winchester Massachusetts library. Deane Kenny Stryker was sitting at a table in a reading room at the WinchesterP ublic Library when mentally ill Jeffrey Yao ride his bicycle downtown to the public library, carrying a 10-inch hunting knife, sneak up behind an old high school classmate, Deane Kenny Stryker, and stab her more than 20 times, killing her. allegedly started stabbing her from behind with a 10-inch hunting knife, killing her and then stabbed 77-year-old Lester Taber who yelled to stop. Yao's lawyer says his client is mentally ill and that the attack was random, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and armed assault with intent to murder. Stryker was studying at the University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. It’s not now known what actions were taken after the five occasions between March 2013 and last September when police took him to Winchester Hospital. He may well have spent substantial time off the streets and in treatment. Officials so far haven’t said.

When a young man well-known to police and neighbors for bizarre and scary behavior suddenly stabbed a former schoolmate to death in Winchester last month, many people asked why someone so seemingly dangerous was allowed to roam freely. Virtually nothing has been publicly disclosed about whether Yao gave any signs that his apparent mental illness was worsening in the months immediately before he used a kitchen knife to end the life of 22-year-old Deane Kenny Stryker. Should he have been committed to a psychiatric hospital before it came to that? It’s possible that he had been. It’s not now known what actions were taken after the five occasions between March 2013 and last September when police took him to Winchester Hospital. Winchester High School, where Yao was once a member of the wrestling team, students noticed that he seemed to have stopped bathing. When a classmate’s mother died, he posted a cruel comment on her Facebook page... fall of 2012, Yao disappeared from the neighborhood again. It turned out he had gone to college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, N.Y. But within a short time, he dropped out and was back... last September, a resident on Farrow Street woke to the sound of something crashing. He looked out his window and saw Yao on the porch below, throwing his body against the glass slider door. The man in the house started screaming, and charged downstairs. Yao ran off, he said, and soon after, Yao’s father appeared at the house to apologize. “I was yelling at him, ‘Howard, he’s going to kill somebody!’.. charged with attempted breaking and entering... Rumors swirled sometimes about mysterious problems, like a rash of flat tires. Some blamed Yao, but it was never clear who was to blame.
