Kyoto Animation massacre

Kyoto Animation massacre --- ===

Thursday, 18 July 2019. Kyoto Animation massacre arson attack at Kyoto Animation's Studio 1 building in Kyoto, Japan[3] Shortly after 10:30 a.m., an unidentified 41-year-old man[4] poured gasoline inside the offices and on workers, shouting "Die!" or "Drop dead!" (死ね) and setting fire to the building.[5]The man fled but was chased by a Kyoto Animation employee before almost immediately collapsing on the street, where the police apprehended him.[6] At least 33 people were killed, with 36 others injured and hospitalized.[7] It is reported to be the worst confirmed mass-murder incident in Japan's post-war history[8] and the worst building fire in Japan since the Myojo 56 building fire in 2001.  deadliest in Japan since 2001, when a blaze in Tokyo’s Kabukicho district left 44 dead.

On July 2, 2008, five of the defendants were convicted of negligence in the Tokyo District Court. As of July 3, 2008, Tokyo police had concluded that the fire resulted from arson, but had not made any corresponding arrest.[7]

Japan Today, an English-language online news outlet, quotes Tokyo police as stating that the mahjong parlor located in the building was "an illegal gambling den" with daily revenues of about eight million yen. Japan Today's report speculates that the Chinese mafia and yakuza could have been linked to the incident, as illegal gambling operations are regularly forced to pay "protection money" to organized crime syndicates. However, there is no material or eyewitness evidence of organized crime involvement in the fire.[8]

Police believe the death toll was aggravated by multiple safety violations, including fire doors that were supposed to shut automatically when smoke is detected that remained open because garbage blocked their movement, and blocked emergency stairs.

The 44 fatalities, including customers and workers in the third- and fourth-floor establishments, mainly died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

families of 20 victims, including employees of the mah-jongg parlor, had been awarded public compensation by last July after a labor standard supervision office determined that they died in a work-related disaster.

main focus of their anger was the person who actually started the fire. Investigators earlier tentatively concluded that the fire was the result of arson, but have not ruled out other possibilities.

Dozens dead in suspected arson attack on Japan animation studio ... aerial view shows firefighters battling a fire at a three-story studio of Kyoto. man suspected of torching an animation studio in western Japan shouted that he had been plagiarized and appeared to have planned the attack, media said on Friday after a blaze that killed 33 people in Japan's worst mass killing in two decades.

The 41-year-old man "seemed to be discontented, he seemed to get angry, shouting something about how he had been plagiarized", a woman who saw the suspect being detained told reporters.

"I love fighting games, all things about Japan," said Blake Henderson, a 26-year-old Alabama native and fan of the anime studio who had come to pay his respects.

"I love Japan so much and this one incident won't change my entire perspective on Japan, but it still hurts," he said.

A man resembling the suspect went to a petrol station on Thursday with two 20-liter cans, Japanese media said. Two cans, a rucksack and a trolley were found near the site, and television images showed what appeared to be five long knives laid out by police as possible evidence on the ground outside the three-story building.Source: Reuters)

When he was detained, he told police, "I did it," adding that he had started the fire because the studio had stolen his novel, Kyodo said, citing investigative sources.

Well... Suddenly, I'm not so upset anymore about this incident. Why, because someone claimed that Kyoto Animation stole an idea as the reason for trying to kill everyone there?  As a hint, they rarely work on anything new, the vast majority of their work being animating novels. This means that they work along side the novel authors all the time. The hints are that this occurred because of a phrase in a series based off of a novel. So this is more likely a case where KyoAni was falsely targeted.

An arson attack took place at Kyoto Animation's Studio 1 building in the Fushimi ward of Kyoto, Japan, shortly after 10:30 a.m. JST on 18 July 2019. A man poured gasoline inside the offices and on workers shouting "Die!" and set fire to the building. The man fled but was chased by an employee before collapsing on the street, where police apprehended him.
At least 34 people were killed, with 35 others injured and hospitalized. It is reported to be one of the deadliest massacres in Japan's history since the end of World War II, and the deadliest building fire in the country in 18 years, since the Myojo 56 building fire in 2001.

Background[edit]

Kyoto Animation was one of Japan's most prolific anime studios at the time of the attack, known for titles such as K-On!Clannad, and Nichijou (anime).[2] It has several different locations in Kyoto: Studio 1 was located in Fushimi; Studio 2 (head office), Studio 5, and the merchandise development division are located in Uji, one train station away from Studio 1. Studio 1 was commonly used for the main head staff of the company, and was built in 2015.[3][4][5]
A few weeks prior to the attack, Kyoto Animation had received a number of death threats. Company president Hideaki Hatta said that they did not know whether the threats were related to the incident, as they were sent anonymously,[6] but he had contacted police and lawyers about them. The doors to the studio were usually locked by security, but they had expected visitors that morning.[3]

Incident[edit]

The fire began with an explosion[7] at around 10:30 a.m.[8][9] (01:30 UTC) when the perpetrator walked into Studio 1 and set the building on fire with 40 litres (8.8 imp gal; 11 US gal) of gasoline.[10][11] The gasoline was carried on a trolley after being transferred from two 20-litre cans near the building. The police believed that the gasoline planted on site had mixed with the air, thus causing the explosion at the start.[12] He is reported to have been shouting "Die!" (死ねshine) as he carried out the attack. The perpetrator also poured gasoline over some people before setting them alight, causing them to run out into the street in flames.[10][13]
As the fire grew by the entrance, people were trapped inside the building. Nineteen dead bodies were found on the third floor by the stairs to the roof attempting to escape.[14] The perpetrator fled the scene but was chased by a Kyoto Animation employee and soon collapsed on the street, where he was apprehended by the police.[15] Multiple unused knives were found lying by the scene.[16]
The fire was extinguished at 3:19 p.m. (06:19 UTC).[8] Once the rescue efforts had ended, NHK News confirmed that all persons in the studio had been accounted for.[17] At 10 p.m. (13:00 UTC), the Fire and Disaster Management Agency published its report stating that the building was completely destroyed by the fire. The building did not have fire sprinklers, nor indoor fire hydrants due to its classification as a small office building,[18] but had no deficiencies in fire safety compliance during its last inspection on 17 October 2018.[8] Police have started investigating at the building site.[19]
According to a press conference held on 19 July 2019, the arson attack has destroyed all of Kyoto Animation's materials and computers in Studio 1.[20] The arson is reported to be one of the deadliest massacres in Japan's history since the end of World War II,[21] and the deadliest building fire in the country in 18 years,[22] since the Myojo 56 building fire in 2001.[23]

Victims[edit]

There were at least 74 people inside the building at the time of the fire. A total of 34 people were killed: 28 from carbon monoxide poisoning, 5 who suffered severe burns, and 1 who later died at the hospital.[24][12][25][26][27][28] It was reported that two-thirds of the victims (at least 20) were women, as the studio was known for hiring female animators.[29]
At least 36 people were injured, of which 10 were reported to be in serious condition.[8][30][31] In Japan, the identification of victims is carried out by doctors at the mortuary. As a result, those who died have yet to be identified by name.[32][33] Those who are reported safe include animation director Naoko Yamada, who directed K-On! and A Silent Voice.[29]

Suspect[edit]

Shinji Aoba (青葉 真司 Aoba Shinji), a 41-year-old man, was identified as the suspect.[34][35] After being apprehended by police, Aoba was taken to the hospital with severe burns to the legs, chest, and face.[3][17] During his transport to the hospital he admitted to having started the fire,[36] accusing the studio of "ripping off" or "plagiarising" (パクリやがってpakuri yagatte) his novels.[15][35][37][38][39][40] Authorities are unable to question him further as his injuries are currently being treated at the hospital, and he is under sedation. The investigation process of questioning him is to commence when he wakes.[32][39][41]
Aoba was reported to have suffered from a mental illness and have a criminal history prior to the incident. In 2012, he reportedly robbed a convenience store with a knife in Ibaraki and was subsequently jailed for 3.5 years.[42][43]

Reactions[edit]

In the wake of the fire, a GoFundMe appeal was launched by American anime licensor Sentai Filmworks.[38] With a target of US$750,000, it surpassed the US$1 million donation mark within the first 24 hours.[44][45][46] The appeal has since received more than US$1.3 million.[47] Fans have also taken to Kyoto Animation's Japanese digital store to directly contribute by purchasing high-resolution downloadable images as they do not require staff to ship them.[48] Animate, a major Japanese retailer of animevideo games, and manga, is taking donations at all of their stores to support the victims.[49]
Numerous people and organisations related to the industry expressed concern and supports, such as animator and filmmaker Makoto Shinkai,[10][50] director Tatsuki,[51]American licensing companies Aniplex of America and Funimation,[51] and animation studios NickelodeonSHAFT,[52] Sunrise,[53] Bandai Namco Pictures,[54] and Toei Animation.[51]
Prime Minister Shinzō Abe,[10][55] the foreign heads of government Justin Trudeau[56] and Tsai Ing-wen,[57] and Apple CEO Tim Cook,[58] as well as the Chinese,[59] French[60]and Philippine[61] embassies in Japan, provided words of condolence.[62]
In response to this incident, the screenings for the trailer of the upcoming 2020 Free! movie were cancelled, and Kyoto Animation's collaboration with railway Keihan Main Linewas delayed. In addition, episode 3 of David Production's Fire Force, an anime series about firefighters, was delayed.[47]
