1 killed 1 case dismissed Friday September 27, 2013 Assassination of Louisiana Pastor Ronald J. Harris At 8:20 p.m. at the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a black gunman Woodrow Karey walked up to black pastor Ronald J. Harris as he was singing and preaching before 60 people. Karey shot him once at close range, and hit him again when Harris fell to the floor. A 22 caliber pistol and shotgun were found nearby in the woods, and Karey called the police to turn himself in afterwards. No motive has been given, and the pastor's daughter has no idea why Karey stopped going to the church and then came back to murder. Karey later told police he had seen inappropriate text message sent by his wife to the pastor and Karey's wife had filed rape charges against Harris two days for his shocking murder. Karey's lawyers argued that "facts will confirm that Woodrow Karey Jr. acted in a justified manner" In January 2015. a Louisiana judge tossed out the second-degree murder indictment over the alleged rape of his wife. Karey’s wife had filed a rape complaint against Harris two days earlier. In April, a jury found Karey who was his own defense lawyer to be not guilty because he was protecting his family and honor against an imminent theat, to the shock of the community.

Karey found not guilty in shooting death of Pastor KPLC April 11, 2018  Updated August 26 at 8:53 PM  September 27, 2013.  He was charged with manslaughter.  Karey admitted he killed Harris, saying the pastor had raped his wife and she couldn't get away from him.  Karey took the stand in his own defense  jury found him not guilty even though 40 or 50 people saw him kill Harris with a shotgun. I think it's legalized murder.  That's what it is," said Killingsworth..  jurors sent a question asking the court to define "imminent danger" which would be a reason to justify killing.  "They apparently did not know what the word imminent meant.How can this be justifiable.  It's not. ...  Karey has no regrets. He's a big man, he has a big heart.  He told me while they were deliberating whatever the outcome is, I can live with it.  I have no regrets about what I did because  I did what I had to do to protect my wife," said Clemons.

And so after nearly five years, Woodrow Karey is a free man.

In the filing, Karey's attorneys, Todd S. Clemons and Adam P. Johnson, claim that Karey provided financial assistance to Harris and to the church.

Attorney Ron Richard, who represents Harris' widow, said that nothing Harris did justifies what happened to him.

"Regardless of the allegations made in this matter, it is still the law of this land that 'thou shalt not kill,' " Richard said. "I will pursue wrongful death in this matter until the end."
