January 8-12 2014 San Jose Serial Arsonist Sets Dozen Fires in a Week Greater Saint John Baptist Church on E. San Antonio St. in San Jose was damagedby arson, and another fire was set on the property on Sunday January 12. A series of fires have been evidently set by the same person in the Roosevelt, Little Portugal, Wooster and Five Wounds neighborhoods, as well as the eastern parts of the Brookwood Terrace, Naglee Park and Northside neighborhoods near downtown San Jose, California. January 13 was the first time in six days there were no suspicious fires after a string of 12 suspicious fires over five consecutive days.  A string of a dozen intentionally set fires from Jan. 8 to jan. 12, including a five-alarm blaze on Jan. 9 that destroyed a 125,000-square-foot warehouse. Firefighters originally said that the warehouse fire was not connected to the serial arsons. An officer searched through databases of registered arsonists until he found one that looked like a sketch, and Patrick William Brennan was arrested on January 15 after surveillance. The suspect has  2001 conviction for sexually assaulting a minor. He was arrested in the mid 1990s on a misdemeanor charge for setting fire to forest debris in and around the Grand Canyon National Park. He set 16 fires in Santa Clara County's western hills on or near hiking trails in 1999, leading to a year in jail.

The Japanese targeted forests by sending balloons to set fires or set mines.

May 5, 1945: Japanese Balloon Bomb Kills 6 in Oregon ... Wired May 5, 2010 - 1945 They are the only World War II U.S. combat casualties in the 48 states ...1945:: A Japanese balloon bomb kills six people in rural eastern Oregon. They are the only World War II U.S. combat casualties in the 48 states. A Sunday school teacher, her minister husband and five 13- and 14-year-old students near Klamath Falls. Rev found one which exploded...  Jay Gifford, Edward Engen, Sherman Shoemaker, Dick Patzke and their teacher were all dead, strewn around a one-foot hole. The teacher’s dress was ablaze. Dick Patzke’s sister Joan was severely injured and died minutes later, the Mail Tribune wrote.
The six were victims of Japan’s so-called Fu-Go or fire-balloon campaign. Carried aloft by 19,000 cubic feet of hydrogen and borne eastward by the jet stream, the balloons were designed to travel across the Pacific to North America, where they would drop incendiary devices or anti-personnel explosives... he Japanese released an estimated 9,000 fire balloons. At least 342 reached the United States. Some drifted as far as Nebraska. Some were shot down.  One hit a power line and temporarily blacked out the nuclear-weapons plant at Hanford, Washington. But the only known casualties from the 9,000 balllons — and the only combat deaths from any cause on the U.S. mainland — were the five kids and their Sunday school teacher going to a picnic.
