April 11, 2017  Germany Borussia Dortmund football team bus Islamist terrorist attack Media declared  that "Islamist terrorists came within a hair's breadth of massacring one of Europe’s top football teams". In Dortmund, Germany, the tour bus of the football team Borussia Dortmund of German football league system was attacked minutes after it left a hotel by three sophisticated military style radio controlled roadside IED pipe shrapnel bombs in a hedge which had a range of 100 meters and left metal embedded in a headrest. One of the team's players suffered from glass shards and a fracture and escorting motorcyle policeman were wounded, but the safety glass which blew in slightly prevented further casualties. Officials initially declined to jump to the conclusion of a terror attack against Germany. But police later treated it as a terrorist attack with possible Islamist involvement after 3 letters were found at the scene, stating "In the name of Allah the gracious and merciful" the attack was retaliation for Muslims killed in the German military intervention against Islamic State (ISIS), and threatening to kill more celebrities if Germany didn't withdraw Panavia Tornados team from Syria. Investigation focused two suspects known to  police and intelligence services for affiliation to Islamic State. as one was seen near the bombing site. The arrested suspect is a Iraq member of ISIS since 2014 from Wuppertal identified as Abdul Beset A.who led a commando unit of 10 ISIS-members in Iraq involved in kidnappings, smuggling, extortion and killings. Nevertheless, some believe Islamist claims may be fake as unnamed sources say they cannot reliably assess a motive.

On 11 April 2017, the tour bus of German football team Borussia Dortmund was attacked with explosives in Dortmund, Germany. Three roadside bombs exploded as the bus traveled to the Westfalenstadion for the first leg of their quarter-final against Monaco in the UEFA Champions League. One of the team's players and a policeman were wounded, but the strengthened windows of the bus prevented further casualties.
Police are treating it as a terrorist attack with possible Islamist involvement. A letter was found at the scene, claiming the attack as retaliation for Muslims killed in the German military intervention against Islamic State (ISIS), and threatening to kill celebrities if Germany didn't withdraw. There are two suspects, one of whom is in custody.

Bombing[edit]

The team bus of Borussia Dortmund was attacked with three explosive devices while on its way to Westfalenstadion in Dortmund. The bombs were hidden in hedges and detonated at around 19:15 local time (UTC+2). They contained shrapnel and had a reach of about 100 meters (109 yards). Based on the type of detonator and explosive involved, German authorities assume "terrorist involvement".[1] Spanish footballer and team member Marc Bartra was wounded by shards of glass from the shattered bus window; he was taken to a nearby hospital where his left wrist was immediately operated on.[2] A policeman suffered blast injury and shock; he was driving in front of the bus when the attack occured.[3] At the time, the bus was on its way to the first leg of Borussia Dortmund's 2016–17 UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Monaco at the Signal Iduna Park; the match was rescheduled for the following day.[4]

Investigation[edit]

The German police and state lawyers are treating it as attempted murder and a planned attack on Borussia Dortmund. Police found four letters of confession, three at the crime scene (which claim an Islamist motive) and one on the internet (which claimed an 'anti-fascist' motive).[2][5] The latter is considered to be fake.[6] The speaker of the German Federal Prosecutor's Office said the attack was an act of terrorism with possible Islamist involvement.[7] The NRW Inneminister called the attack "professional".[8] As the letters cannot be attributed with certainty to islamist authors (see below), investigations currently go into all directions: left wing and right wing terror, islamism as well as violent football fans.[9]

Letters of confession[edit]

Police found four letters claiming responsibility. The first three letters were found at the crime scene. The first letter began "In the name of Allah the gracious and merciful", and demanded the shutting of the US military base in Ramstein and the removal of the Panavia Tornados team from Syria. It further criticized German military intervention against Islamic State (ISIS) and concluded with a threat to all celebrities in Germany and other nations, saying that they are on their death list if the politicians do not change their policies.[5] The remaining two letters contained similar writings.[10] The letters were seen as unusual, as previous Islamic State-linked attacks in Europe did not come with such confessions. It is also seen as unusual that the letters directly address the German chancellor and do not contain any religious justifications or ISIL logos as previous claims of responsibility by video did.[11]
Another letter was found online on far-left, open publishing website IndyMedia. It said the attack was made because Borussia Dortmund did not do enough against racists, Nazis, and right-wing populists within its fanbase.[5] The letter was removed as fake. The police also treated the letter as fake.[6]

Suspects[edit]

The police identified two suspects and arrested one of them. The apartments of both suspects were searched.[7] The arrested suspect is an Iraqi from Wuppertal and is suspected of being an Islamist.[12][13] The arrested suspect was identified as Abdul Beset A., and a member of ISIS by German police, having led a commando unit of 10 ISIS-members in Iraq involved in kidnappings, smuggling, extortion and killings.[14][15] Having joined ISIS in Iraq in late 2014, he arrived back in Germany via Turkey in 2016, and was then in contact with ISIS-members in Germany.[14][15]

Aftermath[edit]

The match was postponed until the following day (12 April 2017) at 18:45 CEST, which resulted in a 3–2 win for Monaco.[2] Both Monaco and Dortmund fans united in friendship after the bombing. Many Dortmund fans, Germans and local hotels offered Monaco fans free food and places to stay for the night, experiencing German hospitality.[16] Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel expressed her appalled reaction to the attack.[17] The staff of Borussia Dortmund and former football player Lothar Matthaus criticize the short-term planning of the UEFA.[18]
