South Korean Ferry Sewol Sinks

South Korean Ferry Sewol Sinks --
tags: Timeline 2014School IncidentAsian VictimBoat incident, sinking, no cause known, mass casualty

April 15, 2014  Casualties: 302 total 121 dead 181 missing South Korean Ferry Sewol Sinks The South Korean ferry Sewol which was filled mostly with students from Danwon High School in Ansan City. They were on a field trip to an island when it started listing and capsizing for some unknown reason after a J-shaped turn as ships assisted in a rescue effort. Passengers were told to stay in place until rescue boats arrived, at which point the ship was tilted too far for passengers to walk outside or for the crew to reach the life rafts. At least four are dead and hundreds are missing of the 470 aboard as the ship sank leaving only the overturned bow out of the 100 ft deep water.

Lee Joon-seok, captain of the Sewol, apologized for for fleeing the ship before all passengers could evacuate, and he was filling in for the regular captain who was on vacation. Even he was away and put the third mate in charge of steering the ship which was close to rocks. The ship was east of its normal route, as some questioned if he was taking a shortcut to save time. Rim Gung-su, a professor at Mokpo National Maritime University suspects that an abrupt turn could have caused cargo to shift and cause the initial list. Passengers heard and then felt a crash as the ship first tilted slightly but in only two or three minutes shifted to 45 and then 90 degrees vertical.” Passengers were only told once to stay in place until they were rescued, but such angles would make it impossible to climb to the outside.

So far, 121 people have been confirmed dead and 181 remain missing, the coast guard said.

The South Korean ferrycapsized while carrying 476 people, mostly secondary school students from Danwon High School (Ansan City).[6]

Another disaster for school children, this would be the deadliest disaster to hit a single school, worse than any terrorist or lone wolf attack by gunmen, bombs or stabbing. This was soon after a mass stabbing at a high school and a truck hit a bus in the United States. The Costa Concordia cruise ship sank off Italy as it hit rocks after the captain deliberately sailed off the normal course allegedly to make a display to a friend on shore.

Points
  • Costa Concordia
    • most life boats didn't even try to deploy
    • listed much faster
    • also used slightly different route in not very deep water
    • ship resting both at surface and sea bottom
    • very sudden swerve instead of just slow maneuver to show off to friend
    • passengers not told to evacuate until too late
  • Captain in hoodie similar to father of Minneapolis airport stowaway boy who apologized

Before It’s News has received inside information from a trusted source who warns that the sinking of a South Korean ferry days ago was an act of war by North Korea using a mini-sub torpedo to sink the ferry. South Korea knows about this hit, we are told, and is hushing it up to avoid the very real possibilty of imminent war. Back in 2010, the ROKS Cheonan was sunk by a North Korean mini-sub torpedo as shared below from Wikipedia, prompting this FOX News story: “Is the U.S. Prepared to Face Midget Subs?” A May 2010 Washington Post story concluded:

“A mini-submarine like the type that is assessed to have penetrated the NLL is designed specifically for covert maneuvering in shallow waters like those that exist off of the west coast of the Korean Peninsula,” he said.

“The fact of the matter is, a submarine did infiltrate into South Korean waters — and they have done so in the past fairly frequently,” he said.

    “It is their mission.”

Video footage below includes RAW cell phone footage of the S. Korean ferry sinking and news reports of the incident. From Wikipedia:

The ROKS Cheonan sinking occurred on 26 March 2010, when the Cheonan, a Republic of Korea Navyship carrying 104 personnel, sank off the country’s west coast near Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, killing 46 seamen. A South Korean-led official investigation carried out by a team of international experts from South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Sweden[1][2] presented a summary of its investigation on 20 May 2010, concluding that the warship had been sunk by a North Korean torpedo[3][4] fired by a midget submarine.[5]

North Korea denied that it was responsible for the sinking.[6] North Korea’s further offer to aid an open investigation was disregarded.[7] China dismissed the official scenario presented by South Korea and the United States as not credible.[8] An investigation by the Russian Navy also did not concur with the report.[9] The United Nations Security Council made a Presidential Statementcondemning the attack but without identifying the attacker.[10]

Pardon me for the alarmist headline without sustaining documentation. I'm not sure if the initial report came from someone with very inside knowledge, or someone who pulled something out of their hat..

Glad to see the headline has been changed. It's now been changed where I picked it up as well, but reading down you will see it WAS the headline.

Until there is further evidence and reports, this should be considered as reported so far.

  8. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. By nightfall, no South Korean official or analyst had raised the possibility of foul play by North Korea, which was accused of sinking a South Korean Navy ship with a torpedo in 2010, a charge the North denied.
During a brief news conference on Wednesday, Kim Young-bung, an executive at the Cheonghaejin Marine Company, which operated the ship, offered the company’s “deepest apology” but few details about what had happened.

The Sewol Disaster

Things usually happen for a reason.  When bad things happen they are very often planned.  Of course accidents happen too, like the editors missing the ‘r’ out of my surname in the title to last week’s column!
After the USS Pinckney, God Bless her, whacked that Chinese sub, I half-thought there might be some kind of retaliation.  It looks like it’s happened.
Folks should have been keeping an extra weather eye out for trouble, but of course the official cover-up of the MH 370 meant that no one outside INTELCOM was thinking in terms of Chinese state responsibility.
Security can be a bummer, because it means you have to be alert.  The penalties for getting it wrong can be severe.  My lady friend and I are taking a domestic flight out of Luton next week, to go on a too long postponed holiday.  Al Qaeda have a strong presence in Luton, and airside access at the airport via local Salafists, so it means I have to think about the safety of the plane and make a few calls I’d rather not make.
It goes with the territory, I’m afraid.  You cannot just sit back fat, dumb and happy, especially if you’ve annoyedal Qaedaand the Cabinet Office, which tends to control airport security at several removes!  There is nothing more irritating than having your plane blow up in mid-air.  It can cause a flight delay, for one thing, and you are bound to spill your drink.

The Sewol
The South Korean registered Sewol was a 20 year old 6,826 ton roll-on roll-off ferry, of Japanese construction.  She was modified by adding additional cabins on her aft deck, raising metacentric height and reducing her stability.  This increased her attractiveness as a target, as it made (a) made it easier for her to sink and (b) provided good cover.
The modifications were approved however and there is no particular reason for criticising the ship’s owners, Chonghaejin Marine Corporation.  She was not particularly unstable by the low standards of RO-RO ferries.
There are grounds for criticising her captain, Lee Joon-Seok, not least for leaving his ship and failing to ensure the safe evacuation of her passengers.  Not for one moment however do I think that we are getting the full story, or anything like it.
The media and authorities always rush to blame individuals, or corporations.  They never stop to think that there might be a deeper conspiracy.  Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn’t.  Each case turns on its own facts.  The obsession with blaming individuals, as with the DVD’s assassination of JFK, when the media and the Warren Commission fixated on Lee Harvey Oswald, tends to obscure the truth.

The Proximate Cause of the Disaster
Contrary to initial reports, it does not seem that the Sewol struck a rock.  There was no sign of damage, let alone a gash, on her upturned hull.  One would expect the bow to be damaged in a fatal collision with an underwater obstacle.
It does appear that she capsized after a sharp turn to port, causing vehicles or containerized cargo to shift.  That’s where the media and the official investigation will stop.  Not the Intelligence Community’s! INTELCOM will want answers to two questions in particular: why did she turn so sharply to port and why was the cargo, or part of it, not properly secured?
Most ships these days do not sail under manual control.  It is quite likely that the Sewol was on automatic pilot when she made that last turn to port.  If so, then we are looking at software sabotage, a Chinese specialty, as I have observed before.
Failure to secure the cargo, if indeed it was not secured, is an anomaly.  Even rookie sailors know to secure the cargo.

The Kids

Spyhunter
What made the sinking so tragic was the presence of so many kids from the Dawon High School.  As I reveal in Spyhunter German intelligence and sister agencies – and the Germans set up the communist takeover in China and trained their intelligence – go for murdering kids, for the shock and upset value.
There are numerous examples – the Athenia, Comet Yoke Peter, the Aberfan disaster, the Saigon Baby Lift C-5 Galaxy tragedy and numerous school and college shootings.  One of those, Virginia Tech, involved a North Korean sleeper agent.
The presence of so many kids aboard the Sewol is a red flag for me.  This one smells, and it’s not just my sensitive nose.  One thing we can be sure of – there won’t be a thorough investigation.

  •  (voice over): This is the first image of the doomed Sewol ferry. Calm seas belied the horrors unfolding within the ship. This is the view from Doola Ace an oil tanker that is first on the scene.

Captain Moon Ye-Shik receives a call to help a ship in distress at 9:06 a.m., 11 minutes after the Sewol says it is in trouble. He soon has the ship in his sights. I could tell the ship was sinking just by looking at it", he tells me. "The situation was so bad I assumed the evacuation was well under way."

It wasn't. This was the scene inside the ship around 9:06 a.m. filmed by a student who did not escape. His phone was retrieved with his body and given to his father. Joking and unaware of the danger they are in at first, they then ask "Why can't they tell us what's going on? The fact that they asked us to wear life jackets, doesn't that mean the boat is sinking?"

Then an announcement the third of its kind you hear on this recording saying, "Once again, please do not move from your current location. Absolutely do not move." So they don't.

Captain Moon and his men are on deck ready to deploy the life rafts to save anyone in the water. Moon tells CNN he is 200 meters away but the Sewol keeps asking over the radio where the rescue boat is. 9:14 a.m., Doola Ace talking directly to Sewol says people should escape. A full ten minutes later the Sewol crew member is still asking if passengers escape, can they be rescued?

"This person was inexperienced" says Moon. "In an emergency it should be the captain on the radio. You need to make decisions fast."

But it is unclear where the Sewol captain was at this point. He was one of the 174 people rescued along with 20 of his crews. Moon said he's angry he left his passengers behind.

CAPTAIN MOON YE-SHIK, CAPTAIN OF THE DOOLA ACE: Yes this is very strong current.

HANCOCKS: Moon had been tracking the Sewol earlier that morning as it was on his radar. He says the ship suddenly made a sharp right turn at a very slow speed. The ship's tracking system, the automatic identification system was off he said. Moon wonders if the ship had lost power.

He says he will never understand the actions of the Sewol captain and has decided that this is the last time he will speak about what happened hoping that not talking about it will stop the nightmares he still has about the children he couldn't save.

Seoul's response to ferry sinking assailed; captain apologizes

    Los Angeles Times - ‎15 minutes ago‎
SEOUL - Angry relatives of passengers aboard a sunken South Korean ferry criticized the government's response Thursday as the ship's captain made an emotional apology for fleeing the vessel before hundreds of others had a chance to get out.
Lee Joon-seok, captain of the Sewol, has been criticized for fleeing the ship before all passengers could evacuate. In a broadcast by South Korea’s YTN network, Lee made an emotional apology. "I am really sorry. I don't know what to say," he said, while seated in a chair, surrounded by reporters with a hood pulled over his face. He then repeated, “I’m so sorry.”
The South Korean Coast Guard reported that Lee was filling in for the regular captain, who was on vacation.
The ship sent out distress calls in a position east of the normal route from Incheon to Jeju, raising the possibility that the captain had taken a shortcut. The Sewol’s departure Tuesday was delayed almost three hours by fog.
“It is possible that the ship changed its course to a different route because it was delayed leaving Incheon,” Lee Gyeong-Og, vice minister of Security and Public Administration, said in a press briefing. The company operating the ship, Cheonghaejin Marine Co., has denied changing course.
Rim Gung-su, a professor at Mokpo National Maritime University with more than 30 years of experience as a ship captain, suspects that an abrupt turn may have caused the ferry to turn on its side and sink.
“The ship was moving at full speed, it was very foggy and there were probably a lot of fishing boats around. My theory is that the captain turned suddenly to the right to avoid a boat, which could have caused the cargo to fall over, throwing the Sewol off balance,” Rim said.
He also said that cargo on ships is often not securely tied down as many operators seek to cut labor costs. The Sewol, about 480 feet long, can carry up to 921 people, 180 vehicles and 152 shipping containers.
...the ship was refurbished to increase its capacity. Rim said this would have raised the Sewol’s center of gravity and could have made it more vulnerable to tipping over in the event of a shift of weight. The Sewol was fully licensed and operating legally.
Passengers reported hearing a loud noise before the sinking. “At first the ship tilted about 15 degrees and I assumed it was just because of a big wave,” passenger Kim Hong-kyung, 58, told the Kyunghyang newspaper. “But then it was only two or three minutes until it shifted to 45 and then 90 degrees.”

Someone made the announcement telling passengers to stay in place. Then, he said, he heard a loud bang.
    3. .As of 9:18 a.m. (8:18 p.m. ET Wednesday), there were 289 people missing, and 179 people had been rescued, the coast guard said

    4. Passengers aboard a sinking South Korean ferry faced a terrifying choice as the vessel rolled: obey commands barked over loudspeakers to stay in place, or don life vests and jump into the chilly ocean water.

"Don't move," a voice warned, according to a recording obtained by CNN affiliate YTN. "If you move, it's dangerous. Don't move."

That announcement, some witnesses worried, may have cost some passengers on the ferry Sewol their lives.

"Kids were forced to stay put," one survivor told CNN affiliate YTN, "so only some of those who moved survived."

At least four people were dead and more than 50 were injured after a South Korean passenger ship with about 470 people aboard sank off the country’s southwestern coast early Wednesday.

About 325 of those aboard the ferry were high school students headed to the resort island of Jeju for a four-day trip. About 160 people, including some students and teachers, had been rescued, but nearly 300 were still missing after an hours-long rescue operation that included dozens of ships and helicopters.

The ship overturned completely during the terrifying ordeal before it sank completely.
