casualties: 47 total, 10 killed, 37 injured. Suspect driver at fault, unknown motive April 10, 2014California FedEx Truck Hits School Charter Bus In Orland, north of Sacramento California, FedEx semi-trailer truck on Interstate 5 crossed the grassy median. It apparently swerved as it sideswiped another car and rammed into a charter bus carrying high school students visiting a Humboldt State College preview from Los Angeles. Witnesses in the car that was nearly hit say they saw flames beneath the cab as the truck was already on fire, but investigators could not find evidence of that. Both vehicles burst into flames, and both drivers were killed. 10 were killed and 36 or 37 were injured. No cause or motive for the crash was revealed, as authorities were considering a lack of sleep, medical problem or mechanical failure. The FedEx truck driver Tim Evans taking goods from Sacramento to Weed and back, and another driver said he had seen a similar accident near the same location before.

In 2015, the investigation concluded that the driver of the semi truck was at fault for crossing the median into oncoming traffic, but could not explain the reason for the dangerous and unsafe maneuver. The truck was found to have no mechanical faults. A suicidal attack was apparent not ruled out, or considered as a possibility as the most likely and simplest explanation.

Investigators were evidently not considering the possibility of a deliberate suicide or attack as in the case of 2013 Robert Dellinger deliberately drove his car across the median of a New Hampshire highway, killing 2 when it sheared off the top of another car. Officials noted that the truck sideswiped a small white sedan in front of the truck before it crossed the median and the NTSB observed no evidence of braking by the truck. Whatever swerving it did appears to be in order to HIT, not avoid the bus.

    Analysis:

When a Japanese airplane hits an aircraft carrier, or twin jetliners hit a tower, the motive is obvious, but when a truck crosses the centerline to hit a bus full of kids, nobody has a clue as to even one possible cause. FedEx or any trucks rarely cross the median to hit a bus.

It went airborne and sheared off the top of the other car, killing an expectant couple in connection with the crash, which killed 29-year-old Jason Timmons, 24-year-old Amanda Murphy, who was eight months pregnant and their unborn child, all from Vermont. Dellinger is charged with reckless manslaughter. Dellinger argued with his wife over his medications, left the house and began to drive around, growing despondent.

, two eye witnesses claim they saw fire engulfing the rear of the power unit as it crossed the median before hitting the bus. Various pundits are speculating that the fire, if indeed present as the witnesses claim, may have been the underlying cause for the driver to lose control. Advocates for the banning of twin-rigs note that towing dual trailers adds a much heavier load to the power unit - the engine. The accident happened in California, a state known for high temperatures.

Could the FedEx truck have become overheated, causing the fire? If there was a fire, could the flames have melted brake lines? While there were more than 145 feet of tire marks left from the coach bus as the driver, seeing the tractor trailer careening across the median, attempted to slow and swerve out of harm’s way given the truck’s trajectory - there were no tire marks showing that the FedEx driver tried to apply the brakes. If there was a fire, might the FedEx driver been overcome by smoke?

Why has one obvious possible cause been apparently ruled out: a deliberate attack? There was a chicago truck driver that drove straight into a CTA train station claiming he blacked out just as he got off the freeway exit. One former fedex employee in Houston used his uniform to break into his sister's ex-wife's house and shoot the entire family. Another GA fedex worker went on a shooting rampage. A former executive in New Hampshire told police he deliberately was trying to kill himself when he crossed the median and crashed into an oncoming car. Everything in this story is consistent with a suicide attack. Nothing else makes much sense.

Bonnie Duran, who was driving, told KNBC-TV in Los Angeles that flames were coming from the lower rear of the truck cab.
"I just looked to the left and there it was coming through right at me at an angle. I can tell I wasn't going to outrun him so I just kind of turned to the right and he hit me," she said.
"It was in flames as it came through the median. ...It wasn't like the whole thing was engulfed, it was coming up wrapping around him."
KNBC reported the Durans will be interviewed Saturday by the California Highway Patrol before flying home to suburban Seattle. A CHP spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Investigators have not mentioned the possibility that the truck was on fire before the crash. Police also initially said the sedan and truck were traveling in the same direction when the truck swerved to avoid the sedan.

The FedEx driver should be recognized as a hero for swerving to spare the car and aim his burning truck straight towards the bus. I have no idea what happened here, but in New Hampshire an ex-executive also drove his car across the median to shear the top of a car and kill the couple inside. He was sorry as he only meant to commit suicide. There was a stolen truck from Brazil that also crossed the median to hit a bus in Argentina. Somebody should do something about that day when 13 people were killed in Florida and California in two crashes when two bad drivers accidentally drove on the wrong side of the road until they hit somebody because they were drunk. If this were in Israel, there would be an obvious cause and motive for a FedEx truck to head straight for a bus full of high school kids other than a medical issue or mechanical problem, but these are the same authorities that ruled Fort Hood 2009 and 2014 as workplace violence. Only airline pilots deliberately steer into disaster, never FedEx drivers

USA Today, writing about the safety record of FedEx:

During the two-year period that ended Thursday, the company's vehicles were involved in 730 crashes in the USA. Twenty-three of those were fatal crashes, 223 were injury crashes, and 484 were tow-away crashes.

Don't you think that if drivers of trucks put safety above everything else some accidents could be avoided?

Yes. But keep in mind that FedEx has almost 50,000 vehicles driving a couple hundred million miles each year. I'm not sure how their accident rate stacks up to others, but when you have that many trucks you will have quite a few accidents.

Yes, it does matter.  The truck was on fire before the crash.

Possibility that whatever was happening in the truck disabled or incapacitated the driver.

If not a mechanical issue with the truck, presume a cargo issue:

Possibly someone criminally negligent in sending hazardous materials, whether by intent or stupidity.
Or possibly an intentional act, directed at the package recipient, the driver or  Fed-Ex, or terrorism.

The two fuel tanks, two hundred gallons each, are right behind the cab of a semi-trailer truck. That's the most likely fuel for a fire behind the cab. But the witnesses could have simply seen brake smoke from the 8 drive wheels as the driver was trying to stop the truck before the impact with the bus. There is no indication whatsoever that anything in the trailer was involved, other than as an 80,000 pound ram driving the truck forward.

The post-impact explosion from the bus was likely a fuel-air explosion due to the volatile propane used to fuel a low emissions bus. Diesel isn't very volatile and typically will not explode. But propane or natural gas, mandated by CARB for buses in California, IS very volatile and explosive.

With thousands of vehicular deaths per year what makes this particular story of so much paramount importance? When children die it is always tragic that is a given but these five children are just a few of hundreds that die in vehicular accidents. Sensationalistic by the media. Wish they would report real news more often.

A 26-year-old college counselor has been identified as the first of ten victims who perished after a tour bus carrying high school students collided with a FedEx truck in a horrific fiery crash.
Arthur Arzola, from Rancho Cucamonga, was taken to hospital with severe burns following the crash in Northern California on Thursday but he later passed away.
Arzola, who was married, was aboard a bus carrying a group of Los Angeles-area high school students to Humboldt State University, where he was a counselor and recruiter.
The crash claimed the lives of five high school students, three chaperones and the two drivers. The teens were participating in a program that invites low-income or first-generation students to visit the school.

The crash happened a little after 5:30 p.m. on Interstate 5 near Orland, a small city about 100 miles north of Sacramento.
A CHP dispatcher said the bus and truck were on opposite sides of Interstate 5 when the FedEx truck crossed a grass median, hit a vehicle and then slammed into the bus, causing an explosion and fire.
'Our knowledge of it was that (the fire) was almost immediate, the flames were visible and occupants saw flames in front of bus immediately after impact,' Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones said on Friday.
'This was a horrific collision. The impact was heard throughout the communities. People a quarter of a mile away heard this horrendous impact, and right after that impact there was a tremendous fire with very high temperatures.'
Investigators are now looking at whether the crash was caused by a mechanical failure on the FedEx truck, whether the driver fell asleep or if there could have been another cause.
Earlier, investigators had suggested that the van might have been trying to avoid a passenger car.
'There was a small white sedan in front of the truck,' CHP spokeswoman Lacey Heitman said. 'The FedEx vehicle did sideswipe the sedan before it crossed the median.'
