GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A family of five was able to escape from an early morning fire on Wednesday, thanks to the doorbell ringing.  Fire officials aren’t sure if a neighbor rang it to alert them or if it was caused by a random electrical short.
The fire started shortly before 1:00 a.m. in the garage of a home on N. Hampton Drive NE.  Crews say two adults and three children were inside the house at the time of the fire.  They were alerted to the fire not by smoke detectors, but by their doorbell.  A man heard it go off, went to check things out and saw the smoke and flames. A battalion chief said it’s not clear if a neighbor rang the doorbell or if an electrical short caused it to go off. believed the fire was caused by a vehicle fire in the garage [parked cars don't just catch fire....]

Wish we could see all 4 sides but initially this looks like it started in the garage and spread to the house. That’s why we have to make sure before we utilize exterior water application on attached garages that we take a look in the occupancy to ensure that the pedestrian door between the house and garage is closed, if it is then we can usually proceed as these guys did, if not then the first line needs to go interior.
Also solid or straight streams do not push fire, but fog streams do…the stream application could have lead to the fire spread, we simply do not know cause of the view of the video.

For sure, but economics and renovations seem to conspire to kill firefighters. Single story ranches with attached garages are very prevalent in the northeast (and other parts of the country). The B and D sides are either bedrooms or chimney’d living rooms. An attached garage on either end looks the part, but usually have rear doors for a walk around to a rear covered porch, but not into the interior of the home. Single story ranches are also frequently renovated with an add-a-level on lot layouts never intended to accomodate the square footage, in addition to an added garage and driveway layout practical to the street. The result is attached garages placed against walls where an interior pedestrian door would be impractical, such as a bedroom or living room. Point being again, there is no way of knowing from the street, and assuming the existence of an interior door, and utilizing fire tactics with the anticipation of going unburnt to burnt, might be folly. Checkout Fire engineering training minutes season 1, “Attached Garage Fire”. Although an interior door does exist in the video, the same tactics still apply if there were no interior door.

Well, being in MN, it is a darn good bet that there is an entry door into the house from the garage. Think winter, really cold temps, etc.
As CHAOS stated which also relates to my area, there is a 99.9% chance that there IS a door between the garage and living quarters. At least on anything built in the last 30-40 years.
Either way–door or no door–this was a piss poor tactic, after the first minute or two.

Spontaneous combustion of staining rags, left behind by a painter, apparently caused the Eagan house fire. investigation showed the blaze began in highly combustible rags that a painter had left in the kitchen after a staining project, the fire chief said. Scott said in his 20 years as a firefighter, he's heard of a few doorbells going off at fires as wiring shorted. But he's never known of one waking a sleeping famil

EAGAN, Minn. -- A family that was ready to celebrate a completely remodeled home is instead homeless, after a fire in Eagan early Thursday. Crews arrived at the home

Eagan Fire Chief Mike Scott says a woman and her two children woke up to what firefighters believe was the front doorbell shorting out. They tried to escape through the front door but were turned back by smoke and flames. Eventually the woman, her children and the family dog managed to escape the home safely through a downstairs patio door, and called 9-1-1 from a neighbors home. The woman's husband was out of town on business. The house had been undergoing a major remodeling project, and was just weeks away from completion. Today, it is likely a total loss instead.

A mom and her two sons escaped a fire at their Eagan home after a doorbell apparentlyshort-circuited and started ringing, a fire official said.
Shortly after midnight, the homeowner heard the doorbell ringing and got up to investigate. She saw the kitchen on fire and went to wake her children in the basement. Fire officials believe the fire caused the doorbell to short circuit and start ringing, Scott said (or who started the fire rang the doorbell as a courtesy??)

A Fayetteville NC woman says she thought someone was pulling a prank by ringing her doorbell at 1 a.m. Thursday. It turned out no one was at the door, but the ringing alerted her that the home was on fire.
Sharon Mardis says it was a miracle she, her four children and pets all escaped before the roof caved in.
"My doorbell started ringing and I came to the door, there was nobody at the door," Mardis said. "I went back in the house; got 10 to 20 feet and the doorbell started ringing again. I came back to the door, nobody at the door. I stepped outside and looked for who was ringing the doorbell, but then when I walked back inside and I smelled smoke."
Fire investigators suspect the fire began in a bathroom that was being remolded, then burned up the walls and into the attic space.
Firefighters say the fire apparently melted wires to the doorbell together and it kept ringing in spurts.
