Paragraph
May 2, 2013 Cal State Fullerton student Maribel Manriquez Ramos was reported missing when she missed her speech at a veterans appreciation dinner. The 36 year old veteran was last seen in surveillance building near her apartment. She had served in the Army in Korea and Iraq and was just weeks away from graduating with a degree in criminal justice. Her body was found May 18 dumped in an sparsely populated part of Orange County where it abuts the mountains. On May 21, 2013 former Korean roommate Kwang Choi Joy, 54 was charged with one felony count of murder, according to Orange County district attorney's office. Joy had called police to report Ramos missing and appeared on newscasts talking about her disappearance. He had scratches on his arm when he was arrested. He was angry that Ramos had evicted him for failure to pay rent. Joy cried out "Hell, no!" when asked if he killed Ramos, and continues to call her his "best friend," his "family" and his "dream. Early in June, friends and family attended an emotional memorial in Santa Ana, and CSU awarded a posthumous degree to Ramos.

UPDATE NO. 3, MAY 21, 4:58 P.M.: Did K.C. Joy kill Maribel Ramos because he loved her and she didn't love him back? Deputy District Attorney Scott Simmons offered that theory at the Santa Ana courthouse today.

According to a Korean blogger: "Joy used to live in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he threatened to kill his sister who still lives there early this year. He may have skipped bail and and possibly has been using aliases (he's sometimes described as Cho and other times as Choi and he uses "K.C." sometimes, and I'm not sure how one gets Joy from any Korean last name, unless he went Choe [for 최], took that to its common misspelling of Choi, and then decided that should be Joy)."

Kwang Choi "K.C." Joy Answers "Hell No" When Asked If He Murdered Maribel Ramos: Update
By Matt Coker Wed., May 22 2013 at 2:47 PM 13 Comments

OON: Kwang "K.C." Joy, who is currently being held in lieu of $1 million bail, is due to be arraigned Tuesday for the murder of the 54-year-old's roommate of one and a half years, Maribel Manriquez Ramos.

Questioned by police and the media in the days after the 36-year-old U.S. Army veteran and Cal State Fullerton criminology student went missing, Joy had described Ramos as his best friend and the only family he had.

    Rent dispute:
A reader in our comments section to this post points to a bail-bond company's Most Wanted In Tennessee Facebook page, which shows a Kwang Choi Joy being wanted and last seen in California.

But a check of the link there for more information on the crime goes to a page that no longer exists. Which brings up more confusion, such as that of the suspect's name. That last Orange police report identified the man arrested for Ramos' murder as Kwang Cho "K.C." Joy. Other sources give his name as Kwang Choi Joy, and still others as Kwang Choi (without the Joy).

UPDATE NO. 2, MAY 21, 8:51 A.M.: Maribel Manriquez Ramos and Kwang Choi "K.C." Joy argued on May 2 about the man's unpaid rent, which included her demanding he move out, according to the Orange County district attorney's office (OCDA). Either that day or the next, Joy murdered Ramos, then dumped her body in Modjeska Canyon, reads an OCDA statement on this morning's scheduled arraignment hearing for Joy.

Authorities in Orange County have arrested Kwang Choi Joy (don't ask me how he got that name) for the killing of Cal State Fullerton student Maribel Ramos, allegedly after an argument over Ms Ramos deciding to kick out Mr Joy for failure to pay rent.

    From OC Weekly:
Kwang "K.C." Joy, who is currently being held in lieu of $1 million bail, is due to be arraigned Tuesday for the murder of the 54-year-old's roommate of one and a half years, Maribel Manriquez Ramos.

Questioned by police and the media in the days after the 36-year-old U.S. Army veteran and Cal State Fullerton criminology student went missing, Joy had described Ramos as his best friend and the only family he had.

Joy had said he last saw Ramos outside their Orange apartment on May 2. Her family reported her missing the following day. The woman's body was found May 16 near Santiago Canyon and Jackson Ranch roads in Modjeska Canyon.

After the county coroner confirmed the identification of the body, Joy was taken to the Orange Police Department, questioned and arrested.
Ms Maribel's body was found dumped in Modjeska Canyon, one of the rugged mountain areas found in the less populated areas of OC jutting the mountains.

Mr Joy was apparently not a nice guy, or maybe a nice guy who didn't always take his meds: he used to live in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he threatened to kill his sister who still lives there early this year. He may have skipped bail and and possibly has been using aliases (he's sometimes described as Cho and other times as Choi and he uses "K.C." sometimes, and I'm not sure how one gets Joy from any Korean last name, unless he went Choe [for 최], took that to its common misspelling of Choi, and then decided that should be Joy).

For those of us who seek tenants or seek roommates and housemates, this kind of thing is always fraught with some level of peril. How do you sift through the reams of people contacting you on Craigslist to determine who is going to pay their rent on time, clean up the bathroom and the kitchen and keep their room tidy, and not murder you.

Requiescat in pace, Maribel Manriquez Ramos.
