By September 2013 FBI crime statistics showed that Chicago, with 500 murders in 2012, replaced New York, with 419, as the murder capital of the U.S. In terms of mass shootings, crimes with assault rifles like the Back of the Yards AK-47 park shooting are unusual, but but as of September 2013, of 2,853 people shot in the city since Jan. 1, 2012, there have been 89 shootings involving three victims, according to the Chicago Tribune. In the same period there were 31 incidents in which four people were shot, and nine incidents in which five people were shot.On September 19th alone 13 were shot, while the next day and evening there were 9 separate shootings scattered across the city. A few people are questioning if these shootings should be treated with the same fear as terrorist bombings like the Boston Marathon, or mass shootings like Newtown or Aurora Colorado.

- June 2013 At least three people, including a 15-year-old boy, were shot in a single episode in the West Englewood neighborhood in early June of this year. The boy was somewhere else on the block and shot and wounded in the leg. Officials did not believe he was the intended target. (3 injured)
- July 4, 2013 During a violent Fourth of July weekend this year, a 24-year-old man died shortly after two men stepped from a dark sedan and fired on a group of people standing on the 1000 block of West Maxwell Street, not far from new police and fire stations. Two others were injured. (1 killed, 2 injured)
- July 4, 2013 a 26-year-old man was hit in the head and died after he and two other men were shot in the 6600 block of South Champlain Avenue. (1 killed 3 injured)
- September 19, 2013 13 people are shot and wounded in a drive-by shooting by dreadlocked men with bullets consistent with an AK-47 assault rifle. The victims included 3-year-old Deonta "Tay-man" Howard whose face was nearly shot off, and two teens in Chicago's South Side Cornell Square Park. Police remarked it was a miracle no one was killed. Police believe it was part of a dispute between the Gangster Disciples and the Black P Stone Nation [2] (0 killed 13 wounded)

- 12:45 a.m. in the 3600 block of West Augusta Boulevard, a man was shot in the chest, police said. The victim, Rubin Austin, 25, of the 1100 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, was pronounced dead at 1:38 a.m.
- 6:35 p.m. teenage boy was shot in the foot in the 700 block of West 72nd Street in the Englewood neighborhood.. he had heard shots, then felt pain, but otherwise gave little information about the shooting, was in good condition
- a 36-year-old man identified by the medical examiner’s office as Johnny Tinsey, was shot near 77th Street and Sangamon Avenue about 6:56 p.m. Thursday dead at 7:37 p.m. Thursday
- 7:52 p.m. in the 3800 block of West 57th Place in the West Elsdon neighborhood, two men in their 20s were shot, O’Brien said. One was shot in the stomach, and the other suffered a graze wound to the thigh, and both had had their conditions stabilized at Christ Medical Center.
- About 7 p.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in the stomach in the 6100 block of South Normal Boulevard, according to police. The shooting originally had been reported as happening a few blocks away, on Aberdeen Street.

- 4:00 a.m. A 41-year-old man was shot in the Gold Coast neighborhood on the Near North Side during an argument over a parking space.

- 6:15 p.m. South Shore neighborhood A gunman approached 18-year-old Jaleel Pearson and shot him, he died in the hospital.

- Friday September 27, 2013 10 wounded in shootings Friday and early Saturday
- 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Little Village neighborhood. An 18-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy heard several shots hitting the boy in the leg, the man in the chest and both legs, both in stable condition.
- 8:30 p.m. Gunman appears out of a gangway and opened fire on a parked car with 3 women in the Chatham neighborhood. One woman was in condition with a gunshot to the hand and a graze wound to the cheek.
- 10:20 pm A teenage boy crossing a street in the South Shore neighborhood was approached by a male shooter, and shot in the shoulder and buttocks. Stable condition
- 11:10 pm Drive-by shooting of four people (3 men and a teenager) on the sidewalk were shot in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood, with injuries to legs, back, thigh, and hand, one seriously injured
- Saturday September 28, 2013. Shots fired at people standing outside and and sitting in vehicles. Total 10 persons wounded that night since the previous friday.
- 12:20 am 21-year-old man was shot in the foot in the Austin neighborhood standing outside with his girlfriend, stable condition.
