At the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar just after 2 a.m. Romiro Carnalla, 26, of Los Angeles, rushed past security and stabbed a nurse stabbed several times. The suspect was arrested, and a knife was recovered at the scene. Hours later at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Thomas Robert Fredette, 38 was arrested after he allegedly approached a group of nurses, grabbed one from behind and stabbed her in the ear with a pencil.

The attacks were believed to be unconnected, unlike the case near-simultaneous bombing attacks in two locations which would tip authorities to the possibility of planned terrorism.
