February 3, 2014 Death of African American physical therapist ruled drug accident The Department of Justice is investigating the death of Alfred Wright, an African American physical therapist who disappeared and died under mysterious circumstances in an isolated section of Texas. He was last seen November 7, 2013 with trouble with his pickup truck. His body was found partially clothed in boxer shorts shoes and only one sock, with severe trauma to his neck and head. His body was missing an ear and two front teeth and tongue, and his throat was cut. The trauma was determined to be caused by animal and insect activity, as toxicology determined his body was filled with cocaine and meth, so his death was ruled as accidental due to drug intoxication and there was no evidence of foul play . (cnn)

Part of a pattern of suspicious deaths of black athletes, musicians, students, pastors, and health professionals.

Wright's disappearance was still a mess of confusion. A private investigator suggested that he may have been on "bath salts," speculation that the family strongly denies. But the Sabine County sheriff's office claims that Wright's wife told deputies that he "may have been using an unknown substance causing him to be paranoid," and shortly after the story of Wright's disappearance broke, it was reported that he was under indictment for federal embezzlement charges in Tennessee for allegedly defrauding a bankof "over $1,000."
It's clear, in other words, that there are people involved who are convinced that Wright was a drug user who disappeared shortly before he was supposed to face serious criminal charges, while there are others who are convinced that he was the victim of violence that occurred in a part of the country where violence against African-American men is not unheard of. And it's possible that neither or both allegations are true.
The official cause of death from the coroner was accidental "combined drug intoxication" from a mix of cocaine, methamphetamine, and amphetamine. But a different pathologist, hired by Wright's family, stated that there appeared to be "severe trauma to the neck and head." CNN reports that "Wright was missing an ear, two front teeth, and his tongue" and that "his throat appeared to be cut," trauma that the initial examiner attributed to "animal and insect activity."

  3. ...Alfred was found by volunteers and his father. He was stripped to his boxer shorts, wearing only a single sock with his cell phone tucked inside, and both his sneakers. He was missing an ear, two front teeth and his throat was slit. There was not a lot of decomposition in comparison to most bodies found in the elements after 18 days. On November 26, 2013, forensic pathologist John W. Ralston MD, ruled his death “accidental” due to “combined drug intoxication,” in other words, a drug overdose – cocaine, methamphetamine and amphetamines. The family isn’t buying it because Alfred never used drugs. His family had their own autopsy and the pathologist concluded that he died of severe trauma to the neck and head and a gash across his throat. The county’s autopsy report didn’t address the cut on his neck or throat area and also went on to report that any damage caused to the body was caused by animal activity, offering no explanation why the cut across his neck was a straight line and why the animals didn’t chew him to the bone after being out in the woods for over 18 days.

    • Jeez! If the only thing I read was this article, I'd be suspicious too. But as a resident of the area, familiar with the deceased and his friends, I have to tell you Mr. Wright was not "unknown to use drugs," his throat was not "slit," his body was not as close to the search as this article describes (and as one who has been on a body search, sometimes they are indeed found near where they were supposed to be but are overlooked in grassy and wooded areas). Alfred Wright was a very sweet man. I never saw him without a smile on his face, but he had problems - including an embezzlement charge in Tenn. and drug use. The shallow "puncture" wounds are consistent with running through a barbed-wire fence. The other wounds (ear, etc.) are attributed to scavenger activity. It is a tragedy, not a conspiracy. Drugs kill and the drugs Alfred was known to use cause paranoia. You won't find it unless you read every article, but he also smoked the "fake" marijuana, which is a horrific replacement that I've personally seen prompt behavior consistent with the scenario described in the paranoid behavior noted by witnesses. Combine that with the cocaine and meth his death is attributed to officially, then the real story is clear to see. Tragic, very much so. A law enforcement conspiracy, no. Not at all.
This area isn't a "red zone" for racial hatred. Do Sabine and her surrounding counties still work through race issues? Yes, but it's fading just like every other place with a heavy population of older folk who haven't yet made the leap to the age of reason. Violent crime is rare, except when drugs are involved - just like most places around the country. I will say this. To be called a racist is one of the lowest insults a person can call another and when those who profit from race-baiting in the guise of social justice awareness start flocking to your area, it doesn't help race relations, it only makes it worse.

Well I don't know what to say in response to you. Local law enforcement's account just doesn't add up:
          http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/14/...
Are you getting the details of the story from a more reliable source? Can you direct me to other reports that provide a different perspective, similar to the one you wrote?
You know, you don't have to take it personally that law enforcement is suspected of letting racism affect its handling of this case. Just because you live in the region doesn't mean you are responsible for the local law enforcement's conduct; however, you should take care to avoid excusing or rationalizing their bad handling of the case -- if they're guilty of that. Whether it's fair or not, law enforcement in East Texas has a bad reputation for a reason -- it's a long history of many, many, many generations of black residents who experienced brutality, mistreatment, and unequal or non-existent protection of their physical selves or property. Hopefully that's all in the past, but it's a reputation for deeply institutionalized racism that undergirds the suspicion other parts of the country hold toward the region, and law enforcement will have to maintain a "clean" reputation for a while (maybe decades) before the cloud of suspicion is completely dissipated.

Well, CNN discredited themselves in the very first line of that story. I don't know where they got that information, but it's common knowledge here and his wife is quoted as saying he became "paranoid" using an "unknown substance" (bath salts was one of his problems)
And I don't disagree that racism still exists today, but most of the people who live here work very hard to be examples of real Christian morality and don't accept racism in our friends either. Our children grow up in schools that in some cases are predominately or at least almost equal between black and white students and those friendships last long after high school.
As for law enforcement, there are bad apples in every paramilitary organization who abuse their power. It makes me ill to study the disgusting treatment heaped upon our black brothers and sisters before, during and after the Civil Rights Movement and the horrific jury nullification that happened as murderers were set free by white juries after killing black men, women and children. But that's just not reality today. If I'm wrong, and they determine our sheriff's department was indeed guilty of some crime, then I'll be the first to call for their removal. As a former crime reporter, and award-winning investigative journalist, I have to say this is a case not of police wanting to investigate, but a case where a good person did drugs, overdosed and ran through a barbed-wire fence after stripping off his clothes in a paranoid drug frenzy. Bodies are often overlooked and then discovered in an area marked as cleared previously. And we live in the woods, where scavengers are rampant. Foul play would sensibly be ruled out by officers when his clothing and wallet were found. Finds a woman's clothes, you automatically think foul play. Find a man's clothes and you scratch your head. He was last heard from calling for a ride from the liquor store because his truck broke down and last seen running down the road...
The search lasted a few days. The community and family looked after the police stopped. They "exhausted" their resources (not a huge department mind you. And crime continues that needs to be addressed) but in reality, they knew he'd turn up one way or another. How long are they supposed to search, given that they knew he had a drug history? His wife told them so. Limited manpower logically has to prioritize accordingly.
Further, when the family began to protest the actions of the sheriff's department, said department immediately turned the case over to independent investigators, ie. the Texas Rangers. How better to cover there rear ends but to allow an unquestionably superior and totally unbiased agency prove no wrongdoing?
Unfortunately, now all the race profiteers are descending upon the area (Black Panthers were here the other day...) fomenting hate in the name of "Justice for Alfred" when Alfred, bless his heart, did this himself. In my educated opinion. These circuses provide no healing, but they do make the "old folk" start up their nasty talk after we younger folk have finally toned them down. And then the young adults who have always gone back-roading and drinking with a racially mixed group are posting negative comments about the Black Panther rally. That's what makes me angry. Leeches who make money setting back racial healing ten years.

A forensic pathologist should be able to tell if he was dead before the injuries occurred. For one thing, after the heart stops beating there will not be splattered blood about, it would have just slowly puddled, and if the body was lying so that it's head was higher than it's feet, not much would have oozed out. IT is also possible to tell if an ear was cleanly sliced off or if it was ripped off or eaten away. Prey animals instinctively go for the throat, so if one came across the body, one would have attacked it there and it would have seen that there was no life in it. My guess is that if a forensic pathologist ruled the death accidental then there was no evidence, such as massive amounts of splattered blood and a cleanly sliced ear. They mention "puncture wounds" and it is easy for just about anyone to tell the difference between a stab wound with a knife and teeth marks.

You're insane. There is no indication this was a murder yet. Even if it was, there is no indication it was done by whites OR that there is some conspiracy going on.

Don't hold your breath. Law enforcement had nothing to do with Alfred's death. Better to save your anger and prayers for those involved with dangerous drugs.

I got a post removed because it points out the blatant disregard of common sense ,I've never heard of a suicide by punching out your front teeth ,cutting off your ear and then slit your throat . this guy was killed, murder and a cover-up. So , the local punch line is , he was determined to kill himself ,but not very good at it?
That "story" is an old (tasteless) joke pointing out the "workings" of Southern justice . have you ever watched the movie "to kill a Mockingbird" . Duh, no way you read the book, ask some one , great movie. It's not on A&E
