China Shanxi Explosions

China Shanxi Explosions *
Asian Victims | Timeline | Asian Attackers | Bombings

Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013  China Shanxi Explosions In one of the most sophisticated attacks in recent Chinese history, a series of near simultaneous small explosions at 7:40 a.m. of improvised bombs killed one person and injured eight others Wednesday outside the provincial headquarters of the Communist Party in the northern Chinese city of Taiyuan. Officials arrested a suspect, but did not time him to any terrorist group. One said that the suspect should not be considered a terrorist, but applauded a “targeted attack on the Communist mafia... The guy should be considered a national hero"
Some remarked they fit the pattern of revenge attacks by persons angered to blow up buses, stab officials and attack schools. Explosives were planted in flower beds in two separate locations and that eight blasts were heard in all. Some saw a minivan blow up. The bombs littered the scene with nails and steel balls packed to cause injury, like the improvised bombs used in Boston. On November 8 suspect 41 yr old Feng Zhijun was arrested. He confessed to setting the bombs in Shangxi, but gave no hint of his motive. Bombmaking materials were found when his home was searched. He had previously been sentenced to 9 years in prison. Chinese terror expert Li Wei believed this had major features of a terrorist attack. Witnesses saw smoke and fire coming out from under a bridge after the first explosion, and then saw a minivan explode, while others reported a blast near the Letters and Calls Bureau, where people file complaints against officials.

In one of the most sophisticated bombing attacks in China in recent years, seven improvised explosive devices detonated almost simultaneously Wednesday near the Communist Party headquarters in the provincial city of Taiyuan.
Initial reports said one person was dead and at least eight others injured, one critically.

The bombs went off at 7.40 a.m., as government employees were streaming in to work, and scattered metal pellets and ball bearings through the crowds

.. the explosions were "initially suspected of being a terror attack," but there was no indication as to who the suspects might be or their ethnicity.

...some Chinese were expressing admiration for the bombings in Taiyuan."It was a targeted attack on the Communist mafia. This should not be considered terrorism. The guy should be considered a national hero," wrote an activist, calling himself Jian Alan Huang, on a microblog site.

Though homemade explosives are sometimes used in crimes and revenge attacks in China, Wednesday's blasts seemed more sophisticated. State media said seven or eight explosions were heard. Authorities later found steel balls and circuit boards scattered around the scene, leading police to believe that improvised explosive devices were used, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

"Based on the details, personally I think this incident features characteristics of a terrorist attack," said Li Wei, one of China's top experts and government advisers on terrorism. "Obviously it was well plotted."

Ball bearings and nails were found scattered at the scene, leading Xinhua to report the blasts were caused by "self-made bombs." Such materials are often used to help maximize damage to passersby.

One witness told Xinhua he was waiting on a traffic light in front the building when saw a minivan explode.

Wednesday's incident also bore similarities to past attacks committed by Chinese petitioners from across the country who sometimes target government buildings in an attempt to have their grievances heard.
