5 Hurt When NC Fair Vortex Ride Starts Up October 24, 2013 At the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, five were injured, two seriously as they were getting of the Vortex pendulum-swing thrill ride ride when it started up unexpectedly. It was 11 years on the same day when a worker was killed by a ride at that fair. There was a crashing sound and then two people were seen face down, as the ride operator fell to his knees crying. Five passengers were ejected and were all initially unconscious after trying to exit. The victims were ages 14 to 39.
