    • [UPDATED with Jeremy Lewis Death Deemed Random:] Ali Syed Left Suicide Note in Ladera Ranch Home Indicating Rampage Was Planned

See Update No. 2 at the end of this post on police now saying construction worker Jeremy Lewis' death was random.

See Update No. 1 on investigators exploring whether Ali Syed lured Lewis to the place where he was shot to death.

ORIGINAL POST, MARCH 1, 12:16 P.M.: Ali Syed, the 20-year-old accused of murdering a woman in his parents' Ladera Ranch home before taking off on a freeway rampage that resulted in three more deaths including his own, left behind a suicide note, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

"Within the note were indications that the events Ali Syed was responsible for were premeditated and planned," reads a sheriff's department statement.

Investigators say Sheriff's and the Orange County Regional Computer Forensics Lab investigators found the document titled "Suicide Note" on Syed's desktop computer in his bedroom, according to the statement.

It was created on Feb. 19 within an hour of the 9-1-1 call from Syed's parents that led to the discovery of 20-year-old Courtney Aoki's body in their son's bedroom, according to deputies.

"Although this investigation will continue, to date, Orange County Sheriff's Homicide Investigators have not found any prior connection/relationship between Syed and any of his victims," the statement concludes.

UPDATE NO. 1, MARCH 4, 4:02 P.M.: Ali Syed may have lured construction worker Jeremy Lewis to the place where he was murdered, according to homicide investigators.

      Thumbnail image for jeremy-lewis_facebook.jpg
      Jeremy Lewis, R.I.P.
According to court documents The Orange County Register claims to have examined, Tustin Police Detective Colton Kirwan wrote in the affidavit that Lewis, the third and final victim Syed is accused of killing before taking his own life, was sitting in his Nissan pickup next to where his construction crew co-workers were around 5:40 a.m. on Feb. 19 when he received a phone call.

"I'll be there in a minute," Lewis is said to have told the caller before backing up his pickup and driving to a nearby parking lot, where Syed and his shotgun were waiting for him. Syed, 20, had Lewis get out of the truck and back up so the vehicle could be carjacked, but the construction worker later started running and was shot twice, Kirwan wrote.

The affidavit states phone logs on Syed and Lewis' cell phones support the idea Lewis was lured, and text messages, photos and other evidence from the mobiles show the victim knew the gunman. Lewis, 26, had recently moved to Fullerton from Morongo Valley, according to his Facebook profile.

Tustin police, who have not yet revealed if or how Syed knew his first victim, 20-year-old Courtney Aoki of Buena Park, also explain at this point in the investigation they are withholding how Lewis and the gunman knew each other. The second victim, Melvin Lee Edwards, 69 of Laguna Hills, was by all accounts a random target.

UPDATE NO. 2, MARCH 6, 7 A.M.: Tustin Police are now back to saying the fatal shooting of Jeremy Lewis was a random act.

"At this point in the investigation, there does not appear to be any relationship between Lewis and Syed and the murder appears to have been a random act of violence," reads a statement from Tustin Police Lt. Paul Garaven.

The notion that Syed called Lewis before the construction worker's death was based on a witness statement, according to Garaven. Though the court affidavit covered in the previous update indicated cell phone logs supported the possibility of a call between the two, the spokesman now states, "Investigators have reviewed the records and have determined there were no phone calls made between Syed and Lewis prior to this incident."

Contopoulos is an Orange Coast College astronomy professor who came off a 5 freeway ramp to find Syed pointing his shotgun at him.

At first, driving to work and seeing the figure of a man with a gun outside a white truck along the freeway, Contopoulos figured the driver had hit a coyote that was about to be put out of its misery, he reportedly tells today's Coast Report student newspaper.

Then OCC's 2009-10 Faculty Member of the Year realized the shotgun was pointed at him.

"I looked at him in the eyes, but I couldn't tell anything," Contopoulos said of Syed. At one point, the professor thought of putting his car in reverse. Instead, with Syed motioning for him to do so, Contopoulos slowly inched forward. "When I got near him, he was pointing the shotgun the whole time," the professor related. "I could see his finger on the trigger, I could see his face, I was looking at him in the eyes and, at the same time, looking to the side to see how I could get past him."

As his car got about 7 feet from Syed, Contopoulos says he felt a calm. And when the professor could only make out the shotgun and not the barrel of the shotgun, he jerked the steering wheel to the right, ducked and "floored it."

Syed, who would take three lives besides his own that morning, never fired during a face-off that Contopoulos estimates lasted about 30 seconds. "He had a choice to fire, and he didn't," the academic said. "I  will never know the answer as to why Syed didn't shoot."

California Student Ali Syed Dead Following Shooting Rampage

      20-Year-Old Ali Syed
This morning's killing spree by Ali Syed presents an opportunity to clear up some confusion. Is Syed a Muslim? His name would suggest a Muslim background, but for all we know at this point, he could (possibly) turn out to be a Christian or an atheist. Also, even if Syed was a devout Muslim, he could have had mental health problems, even a psychotic break with reality.

How is this relevant to clearing up confusion? Consider this. When a terrorist like Nidal Malik Hasan, a self-proclaimed "Solder of Allah," opens fire on unsuspecting victims while shouting "Allahu Akbar," politicians and the media are quick to remind us that all religions have their radicals, that people of all backgrounds can have mental health problems, and so on.

True. But this response leaves out an important difference between Islam and other ideologies. Muhammad commanded his followers to violently subjugate non-Muslims (Qur'an 9:29), and terrorism is a divinely-ordained response to aggression, criticism, etc., in Islam (Qur'an 5:33, 8:12, etc.). Hence, while it's possible for someone who happens to be a Muslim to have a psychological break and to go on a killing spree that has nothing to do with his religion (which would be a possibility for adherents of any ideology), it's also possible for a Muslim to go on a killing spree specifically because his religion advocates killing for the sake of Allah (a possibility that does not exist for Christians and other non-Muslims). Similarly, a Muslim may become extremely angry at his wife and kill her in a fit of rage, a tragedy that could (and does) happen among non-Muslims as well. But a Muslim may also kill his wife because his religion supports honor killings, a practice which is not supported by other religions.

This brings us back to Ali Syed, who sounds to me (based on very little information) like a young man who simply snapped. If police investigations reveal that Syed was mentally unstable prior to his violent rampage, then he falls into a category of people that spreads across all religions and ideologies. But if Syed turns out to be some kind of Jihadist (which, at the moment, I find unlikely), this wouldn't put him in a category that spreads across all religions and ideologies. Instead, this would put him firmly in the camp of Muslims who are willing to obey their prophet in all matters--even in slaughtering unbelievers (Qur'an 9:111).

CALIFORNIA (NBC News)--A 20-year-old college student went on a shooting rampage across Orange County, Calif., on Tuesday, killing three people and injuring several others before killing himself, authorities said.

Police said the man, identified as Ali Syed, 20, of Ladera Ranch, Calif., told one of his victims, whose car he stole: "I killed somebody. This is my last day."

In all, there were three homicide victims and at least five victims of attempted homicide, police said.

Syed, a student at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo with no criminal record, shot and killed a young woman in his home in Ladera Ranch, which he shared with his parents, said Scott Jordan, police chief of the town of Tustin, where several of the incidents occurred Tuesday.

The relationship between Syed and the young woman remained unclear, as was the reason she was in the home, police said.

Syed's parents were home at the time, about 4:45 a.m. (7:45 a.m. ET), and fled, Jordan said. Syed then took their black sport-utility vehicle and set out on a drive along Orange County's highways, stopping at times to change cars and shoot people — apparently at random, according to police.

As state troopers homed in on him, he then killed himself. (Continue Reading.)

I am willing to bet Ali Syed, a Jordanian, was Muslim not because of his name, but because of his actions.
I was originally wrote there was evidence that could point to either Syed being Muslim or Christian in the OC, there is no way certain to determine his religion, and that I lived withing blocks of the events in Tustin.
Then I thought, yes, there is a way to know his religion. No 20 yr old Christian unemployed college student would be out of bed at 4:45AM on a Tuesday. A Muslim would be out of bed, though. According to the Islamic Center of Irvine, morning prayer Tuesday morn was 5:08AM.

        Well hello all,
Having just stumbled across this blog, I have to say I’m just amazed there’s this much ignorant hatred in the world, but particularly in America. A nation built on immigration, on a Bill of Rights supposedly proclaiming all men are created equal, there’s a large amount of hateful xenophobic feeling amongst many of its inhabitants.
For the people who constantly proclaim Islam is a religion of hate and intolerance and who shoot down anyone attempting to correct them, I do really feel sorry for your closed- mindedness. I’m well aware of te abhorrent people who shame themselves and me by acting in the name of Islam; rest assured, no Muslim thinks of their actions as Islamic.
However, is it acceptable for people in supposedly influential forums to be overtly racist? In her previous blog entry about Zayn Malik, she calls him a “Paki Muslim”, which If she bothered with any measure of research, is a racist term in the UK. As someone who is Jewish, who mentions the horrors her family suffered, she should be aware of the dangers of indoctrinating people with racist rhetoric, making it acceptable.
I thank Allah that I was born in the UK. My parents raised me to be a good Muslim and a good person, ad let me tell you, the two are not mutually exclusive. I integrate with people of all cultures that I encounter, I’m grateful that I was born in a country that provides me with a world class education, a health system that was one of the greatest gifts a government could give to its people (if I was ever sick, there’s nowhere other than the uk I’d want to be), and most importantly, the freedom to practice my religion without persecution
        ......
Hey pal, enough of you’re taqqiya bullshiite, we not foolef by of you’re own Co-religionists who tries there damn best to deceive and BS us the infidel.
Bullcrap, you akso say that the term”paki” is a racists term, I say bullocks to that claim, I happen to have a few Pakistani friends and they use that term on many issues, so no it’s not a racists term you moron, further more, tell me what race/ethnicity is Pakistani? Pakistani’s are a national groups of people from Pakistan and of Pakistani lineage, etc.
And you also say that you’re a good Muslim! Ok, let’s see, will that be do every single what’s written in you’re Koran by going out of you’re way of let us say cimmitting jihad for allah’s will? Or, is it physically mutilate anyone who does wrong according to your religious book? Are all those thongs ”good muslims” like you suppose to do silly?
